Sparty On!!

Well I ran my second race on Saturday. The Detroit Race for the Cure 5k - really only 3 miles. I left my house around 7:10 and drove downtown to pick up the race packet at Comerica Park. The place got packed in a hurry. The total crowd for the run and walk was estimated at over 30,000!
As the race time approached, I headed up to the runners starting position up on Woodward. I took a nice warm up run up the race course a few blocks and then back to the starting line. It was getting packed up front, and they were not arranging according to pace so I just squeezed in a couple people back from the front. They made the race announcements and let everyone know that they would only take the times for the top 250 people in each gender. Everyone else, thanks for running.
The gun went off and I took off at a fast pace for about the first half mile before I settled into my race pace. Was not feeling good with the run at all! The humidity was beating my butt, and I was sweating like mad. I pushed through and made the turn around a block before heading back up Woodward. I began to pass a few people, and enjoyed running back toward downtown. The city looked really nice and the crowd was amazing walking up the other side of the road (8 lanes wide, compared to the single lane for the return runners). There were a few bands along the route, including a VERY loud hair metal band that actually made me laugh as they head banged to the rhythm. I made the turn off Woodward to start the leg around Comerica Park and caught my 2 mile split at 15:40. This made me feel a bit energized as I knew that I would beat my goal of 25 minutes.
As I ran around the perimeter of Comerica Park, the runners thinned out quite a bit, and lots of people started dropping back. During the final tenth of a mile, in the stretch between Ford Field and the CoPa, I had a runner dry heaving the whole way behind me. I kept glancing back to make sure I wasn't about to get an unwanted shower
. I pushed through the finish a sweaty mess, and was immediately corralled into the line for the top finishers. Really!?!? I couldn't believe that I made the cut! (just barely though as they shut off the line a few runners after me. My estimated finish time was 23:10, well ahead of my goal, and I was feeling pretty good about it. Still waiting for the posting of the time to see where I officially ended up.
Overall, it was a good day in downtown. Even though I didn't feel real good with the run, I was very happy with the end result. Now I am looking forward to another race toward the end of the month, I just haven't decided which one yet
.

Congratulations, Tony! Great race for as congested as it sounded.
