Weight loss requires a change in behavior to be successful. In other words you need to learn to eat better food and less of it on a permanent basis. How do expect this to happen if you rely on pills to initially lose the weight? Without changing your eating habits the weight will come right back and you'll likely end up heavier than you were. Weight loss doesn't come in a bottle, it comes from learning to eat properly.

Read the disclaimer for most of the weight loss products. They say something like " in conjunction with a healthy diet and exercise."
Well........ a pill made only of golf ball dust would help you lose weight, if you ate right and exercised better too !!!!
that disclamer is how they can say the pill helps. When it actually doesn't.

I want to lose 50lbs by tomorrow. If anybody knows a pill I can take - I'm in regardless of cost (shy of losing limbs)
If not I'll just keep running... |

Hmm... loosing limbs will actually work at this case... |

I use fat burners all the time. My favorite kind is M.I.L.E.S.
I hear K.I.L.O.M.E.T.E.R.S. work too, but you have to take more of them and they are still banned in the US. |
"Talent" is a cop-out for not wanting to try harder.
marathon - 2:28

I've heard of M.I.L.E.S! That's Medicine Induced Liposuction Eats Sellulite (T.M. on the botched spelling for fancy industry purposes ), right? I take them daily ever since they were made available in such a convenient form! I've never heard of that K.I.L.O.M.E.T.E.R.S. stuff, though. Maybe it's because I don't follow the underground supplement ring closely enough. I might have to make the switch! |

Uh, yeah, what Trent said. These are probably the same bozos who were popping ephedra up until it was banned for risk of heart attacks, strokes, or death. Is it worth it? |

You probably can't do better than Ernst van Aaken's advice:
"Run slowly, run daily, drink moderately, and don't eat like a pig."
IMHO, to get the most benefits, do that low-aerobic running before breakfast. Running easy when you're in a "fasting" state with stable blood sugar levels will train your fat metabolism and reduce your appetite all day. 36 years ago I wasn't losing any weight as predicted when I ran in the evening. Then I switched to mornings, ran easier, and lost 10 lbs in 2 months. BTW, most folks take about 40 minutes or so (+/-) of easy running to have the fat metabolism really turn on for the rest of the day. It's best not to ingest any carbs (incl. those from sport drinks) for that 40 minutes.

| Quote from huber on 1/25/2008 at 6:54 PM: Several guys at the gym I know have recommended that i try Hydroxicut, Stacker 3, or another form of fat burner to help with the initial process of dropping weight.
Anyone have any thoughts or have used those supplements before?
Thanks!
A time of honesty. Please don't bash me too hard.......I already have a headache.....
Before I began marathon training last August I wanted to lose a few pounds so I tried the new Hydroxycut. Let's just say that taking that along with my running schedule (which was about 25-30mpw at the time) had me running straight for the bathroom. I hated it. Plus I felt like I was wasting my money.
Since I finished my marathon, I've been concentrating on eating better and on portion control. It takes a lot of self will to do it but in one week of watching what I eat (with running reduced mileage of about 10mpw), I have lost 2 pounds. I will weigh myself tomorrow to see if I have lost any more. I don't get on the scale but one time a week just to keep track of where I am.
Portion control gets easier with time. My problem is that I was eating so fast, especially at work where we have maybe 5 minutes to sit down and eat (I work on a critical care floor at a hospital so you can imagine), that I wasn't giving my body enough time to realize that it had in fact eaten and has a full stomach.
What I do is eat one portion of food and I won't go back for another until I know that my stomach feels the food which is 15-20 minutes. Even then I will drink a decent sized glass of water just to make sure I'm not thirsty and feeling that thirst as hunger.
I've also started packing my lunch better. Another big difference for me at work is to not let myself get hungry. I can feel when it barely starts to come on and when I feel it, I will eat a banana or an orange or some sort of healthy food that is easily accessable (fruit works great for this).

Well it took 24 replies, but the OP finally got more than knee-jerk supposition for advice.

| Learning how to eat right is the best thing to do. I joined Weight Watchers almost 2 years ago and learned a lot about the way I had been eating . . . and boy was I fooling myself. I have lost 35 lbs and have kept it off with the help of running. Eat right, exercise and get good rest although I could always use more of that! |

Huber,
I have done extensive research on particular fat burners and have used them on clients for 15 years when in the fitness industry. I love the research and since I worked with and counseled hundreds of individuals for weight loss, I thought I would do some reseach in the real world with the fat burners. What intriqued me the most was BAT (brown adipose tissue) or brown adipose tissue thermogenesis (BATT). This is important for regulating metaboism. The supplement formula I found most effective was ephedra and caffeine in a certain ratio. In fact I created my own formula as I wanted to use herbal caffeine and herbal ephedra vs. synthetic caffeine/ephedra and also wanted to put in adrenal support and some other complimentary nutrients. I only used it on people I trained who were slow responders which is why I did the research to begin with. I was aware of possible side effects and came to find out that many side effects were from abuse.
There were individuals that no matter how hard they exerised or ate better, they still would progress very slowly. It goes against my background philosophy of eat better, exercise more. This works but works much better in some individuals than others. Think of a thin person. They eat or drink all they want and rarely exercise but never get fat. This person has high BATT. Then another person exercise all the time and eats good but is still heavy. We know these people.
Well, I am not going to go to in depth with my studies but can tell you that this formula had unbelievable results in some people with suppressed BATT. I have had people lose 80lbs. continuing what they had been doing with good eating and exercise. Note: I would not do a trial on someone who would not continue with their exercise and better eating. Word of mouth was so strong that ultimately I had people calling me all over the state wanting my particular formula. I did sell it but only after a careful screening process. I found it worked no where near as well in people without depressed BATT. For example, I took it for 6 weeks. I lost 2lbs but am fairly lean to begin with. My benefits came from the appetitie suppression which I feel is half the benefit of the product. To this day, people are still call me for it even though I have been out of industry 6 years.
Anyway, I will not argue with what is being said in industry but do think people are very quick to say, "don't take this crap, it is harmful, it doesn't work". I agree with this on many supplements in industry especiall their lack of efficacy BUT, I can tell you in 15 years in fitness industry using my formula, I did not have one person have an adverse event or even make a complaint to me about my formula and have dozens and dozens of testimonials.
If intriqued about the science, do a Google on brown adipose tissue and/or Dr. Daniel Mowrey a leading researcher in BAT. It is very interesting. At least I think so.......
