New Coldplay album (Read 370 times)

Frustrating Project
Downloaded the new Coldplay album Viva la Vida (or Death and all his Friends) this past Tuesday. I haven't had a chance to really digest it yet, but from a first listen, it's sounding real good. Nothing quite as jaw-dropping as "Clocks" or "Fix You", but the title track is incredibly catchy, as is the track "Violet Hill" and a few others whose names I can't remember right now.

My favorite track so far is the opening track "Living in Technicolor", a two-and-a-half minute instrumental which sounds likes the love-child you'd get if U2's "Where the Streets Have No Name" shacked up with The Cure's "Just Like Heaven" and had sweaty, dirty sex whilst locked up in a Motel 6 over a three day weekend. Which is to say, it sounds glorious. The U2 influence is apparant throughout the album, and that's no mistake. Not only does Coldplay idolize U2, but the album was produced by Brian Eno, who produced U2's The Unforgettable Fire and The Joshua Tree.

I read one review of it which said that the album was incredibly focused at 47 minutes. I like that. Just because you can fit 80 minutes onto a CD doesn't mean you should; although I'm all for value, most albums today seem a little bloated -- not enough killer and too much filler. Abbey Road is about 47 minutes long. Dark Side of the Moon is 43 minutes. Revolver is only about 35 minutes long. Sgt. Pepper is 39 minutes long. Led Zeppeilin IV is 43 minutes. Not that Coldplay's album is in the same league as these classics -- it's not. My point is simply that with albums, sometimes less is more, and Coldplay seems to get that with this release.

Very nice review. Not bloated at all. +1

Thank you. However, I just added the cover art into my review. So now it's bloated. Tongue

No lie, I signed on to RA just now to post about Coldplay's new album.

And I was beaten by a fellow trombonist. :p

Very well said, Jeff. I think it is a fantastic album.

TTF, I'm not sure how you bought your copy, but when I pre-ordered the album on iTunes, I also ended up getting to download a bonus track -- an acoustic version of "Lovers in Japan". It's excellent, and I prefer it to the regular version. Maybe because the acoustic version is in D, as opposed to the rather pedestrian key of G on the album.

I actually did the pre-order on iTunes and clicked automatic download so that on the morning it was released, it would download to my computer. However, it didn't automatically download, I was sent an email asking if I wanted to. I decided that I'd really like a hard copy, so I went out and bought one. And then a week later, it started downloading into my library. So I pretty much paid for the cd twice.

I can just pretend that I paid ten bucks for the acoustic "Lovers in Japan." Yeah, I really like it as well. I think it's a great song to run to too, if you're an iPod runner, G version or D version.

Ha! Great song. Is the acoustic version of "Lovers in Japan" still available?

Is that the same as the Lovers in Japan/Reign of Love track?

Seriously, though. I have a friggin' love/hate relationship with iTunes. I have spent more money on music since I started running and using iTunes than I ever did before. It's WAY too easy to download a track or whole album when the mood strikes. It would be nice if I didn't crave new music all the time.

No, it's a different version entirely. It was a bonus track at the end of the album on my pre-order.
