Marathon Training Programs
1. When did/does your Marathon Training Officially start?
2. How many weeks do you plan?
3. Do you follow standard plan, if so which one?
For me,
1. The Marathon program officially starts in three weeks 7/20/09 the day after my 5 mile summer goal race.
2. 13 week plan leading up to 10/18 Columbus Marathon (MTA --- Currently in 7 week Advanced 10k plan + added LR to keep base miles up .... So in total 20 weeks, but seemed better to break up into 2 segments??)
3. Came up with my own plan for this marathon based on blending several plans; past experience; and goals that I wanted to accomplish.
Thank you for taking the time to read my signature!
1. Ha…I like calling personal choices “official.” I plan to start around August 1st.
2. 14 or so.
3. No standard plan. I train and prepare based on a lot of advice offered by Greg McMillan, but in the end the plan is always the same: lots of miles at different paces. I averaged just under 30 or so for my last marathon, but I am currently running 45+. I plan to maintain 55-65 for 8-10 weeks.
Right on Hereford...
Thanks for putting together this thread, Buckeye!
MTA:
1. When did/does your Marathon Training Officially start? June 21.
2. How many weeks do you plan? 16 weeks
3. Do you follow standard plan, if so which one? Jumped into Pfitzinger 55-70 18-week plan, two weeks late. I'm modifying it by doing recovery runs on the rest/cross-training days (so that I average 70+ instead of just peaking there), and by racing a half marathon 9 weeks out (Pfitz doesn't call for tuneup races until 6 weeks out, and he only calls for tuneup races of 8-15k in this particular plan).

1. I'm in training now, but this summer I'm focusing on rebuilding a base after being injured this winter and running some shorter races 5k-10k. I'll really start thinking about the marathon after my summer racing comes to an end in August
2. I've got a plan written out for the next year, but it's fluid.
3. My own plan
No, I totally made it up and it's very unscientific. It mostly revolves around planned group runs with extra mileage on the other days. All of my races this fall are on trails and I'm introducing several of my running buddies to trail races and ultras this season.
This second time through marathon training, I'm doing 2-3 weeks of building mileage followed by 1 week of cutback, and hopefully this time around I will still be able to walk by the time I get to peak mileage I have a couple of 20 milers and a 22 miler planned before the marathon.
Upcoming plans:
Tahoe Rim Trail 50 M (July 16)
Hot To Trot (August)
Woods Ferry 24 Hour (Labor Day weekend)
Georgia Jewel 50 M (Sept 24)
Pinhoti 100 (November 5)

Dakota, I can totally appreciate your note (wanting to drop 30+ minutes or bust). I'm looking to shave 25 minutes from my PR. Good luck!!!

Early 2008. Really.
See # 1. If you are talking marathon specific workouts I'll say ~12 weeks.
There is a long dark road ahead of me.
Awesome. We definitely need to meet up in Chicago. Good luck to you, too!

1. Already in training. Slow build-up with drills and cross-training to address my quad imbalances.
2. 25 weeks
3. I'm using Matt Fitzgerald's Level 1 Marathon training plan from Brain Training, but with a 5th day of running. 6th day is a slide boarding day. It seems to be helping The plan is 24 weeks long, and I added a week to stretch through fall vacation.
