Hi all,
Thought I would give you a report of tonight's outage. RA became unreachable at around 7:45 PM EST (12:45 AM UTC). I notified the data center support personnel at 8 PM. The data center responded at 8:37 PM saying the problem was caused by the uplink cable going bad. Even though it was replaced, RA continued to be unreachable. The data center tech continued to diagnose the problem and discovered that the switch that he connected the new uplink cable to was misconfigured. The problem was wholly external to RA's servers and there was no data loss.
I was making preparations to bring up the backup servers, which are housed in a separate data center at a different location in case of extended outage.
There will be a scheduled down time some time this month. The data center is expanding and the servers need to be relocated. I'm working with the data center to prepare for the move. The move itself will take about 15 minutes, but it will take another 10-20 minutes to bring the servers down and then back up again. I will post a separate notice when the time comes.
