You don't remember bagphones?? Those were state-of-the art...umm...around the early 90s maybe? I don't remember now. I just remember sitting in a parking lot in my mom's car talking on my bagphone to my friend in the next car over who was on his mom's bagphone and thinking I was cool as sh*t.
Yes---what tipped you off?
Dude, I would call having a bagphone these days parental neglect.
I get a good laugh watching old rap videos (such as Tupac) with those
HUGE
Motorola phones. These days, I am still surprised they let kids in schools have phones.

Oh, I don't have a bagphone now. That story was an early 90s reminiscent.

My wife has the chocolate. It would be pretty good for running. My only complaint about it is that I have big fingers and I push at least three buttons every time I touch it. It is also very sensitive to the touch, so I've hung up on people by pushing it on my cheek.
My daughter has the Juke and it is about the coolest phone ever. It would be a great running phone, very small and a 2 gig MP3 player. I'd recommend it highly!

Ooh, that cheek thing might be a deal-breaker for the Chocolate. I have problems with my squishy face doing that with our home phone, at least when I try to cradle it with my shoulder and cheek.
That Juke does sound kind of neat, but I already have an iPod. I wouldn't be able to use all my iTunes stuff with that, would I?

No, I'm guessing that Apple wouldn't let you move itunes onto it.
But that is the only reason for the chocolate also. It is just an ok phone made cool because it doubles as an MP3 player. You even have to get your own card for it.
But I guess if you could figure a way to put some tunes onto one of them, you wouldn't have to carry a phone and an ipod.

For what it's worth, my experiences are:
Samsung - fantastic user interface, so-so signal, and occassionally crappy voice.
Motorola - Crystal clear voice, fantastic signal quality, user interface so cryptic it's like learning a new language
I wasn't able to break any of my phones from either of those companies, though my wife managed to destroy her samsung (and the Nokia that preceeded it) via multiple drops. Her motorola e815 has spent quite a bit of time underwater, but still works fine (we did have to dry it out overnight before trying to use it again). Both of us have a habit of dropping our phones on hard surfaces.
full disclosure - I currently work at Motorola (that's why I bothered to deal with the user interface in the first place), but I don't expect to finish the year there, so I probably wouldn't get any benefit if everyone reading this went out and bought one.

The one that I threw out the car window about 5 years ago was a Motorola. Didnt see any pieces fly from it until the 3rd bounce, so Im guessing its pretty sturdy. Been leash free every since.

Motorola RAZR!
I've had one for 1.5 years, take it running all the time, no problems. It's small enough to easily fit in the pouch of a Fuel Belt or other water carrier/fanny pack. I even have a handheld bottle carrier with a pouch and it fits in there. In the summer and wet winter conditions I put it inside a ziplock sandwich bag.
I highly recommend it.
I never use an IPOD or MP3, but now you can get a RAZR that doubles as as MP3 player (KRAZR?), and it would probably fit in an IPOD arm band. Mine has Bluetooth, but I never tried using the earpiece while running. I mostly just take it along for emergencies.

I carry the Verizon EnV on my run's and although it is a little bulky in a back pocket it doesn't bounce too much..I like a camera phone because every once in a while I'll be on a run and see a pretty scenic setting s o I'll stop and snap a pic. My kid on the other hand has a phone made by casio called the Gzone it is water resistant and shock proof she loves it.

I have a Sony w810i. It's been a great phone, had it for about 3 years so far, IIRC. Never put it in a case, dropped it 4 times from waist height or higher onto concrete and asphalt and it came through just fine, so it's pretty durable. 512 megs by default, expandable to 2 gigs, I think. It is a great flashlight at night, an MP3 player, 2 mega pixel camera, etc., and it's nice and small.
Although I still run with my iPod Shuffle 2nd gen since it's so lightweight and I didn't particularly like my music getting interrupted by my ring tone in the middle of a run.

Believe it or not, you can still buy them at US Cellular. When I was looking recently to see phones available in my area, they listed a bagphone that they sell. It is the Motorolla M800 and the description on their website says: "The Motorola m800, is a powerful digital bag phone that offers enhanced coverage. It can be used when traveling on rural or urban highways, or out in remote areas."

The Juke is a great little phone I just got it. Its compact and light. You can find accessories like clip on cases and even bluetooth wireless headphones for your music, on Amazon. If you get an incoming call while listening to music, the music will fade out and let you take your call. I have an ipod too but sometimes its handy to have your music right there on your phone for times you forget your ipod.
(Ive dropped it a few times and it has not broken yet

I just got the
Motofone F3
, super thin, weighs only 68g, and cost me only $40. It has a similar form factor as the SLVR but has basically no features except calling and SMS, and is 1/5th the price. The simplicity of the design makes it hard to break (there's a video on youtube of somebody throwing it off a balcony again and again yet still making calls). The price makes it so I won't mind much if it does get damaged.
The big plus for running is that I can slip it into the pocket on the back of my UA running shorts and I barely notice it.

what would be most likely to survive repeated drops to asphalt...?
I have the Verizon Wireless G'zOne Type-S
It's designed to be dropped... seriously. It's a little bulky, but as sturdy as they come.

Wow, that's a good little phone. I have been so attached to flip phones, though...I don't like having to lock my keypad (in the past I have had issues with phones dialing inside my purse or turning off and on unless I have the keypad locked--in an emergency I don't want to have to fumble to unlock a keypad)...so I wish that phone were a flip or slider style--it definitely looks ideal, otherwise.
