Knee Pain...... can someone help (Read 629 times)

I'm hoping someone can shed some light on why my knee is so painful. The last year has been very frustrating due to an injury to my right knee which in hind sight was most probably self inflicted through over training. I was able to get through my injury successfully and with a clean bill of health started my training to realise I needed a new pair of shoes. So off I went and for the first time had a gait analysis and a pair of structured shoes were prescribed. My right foot being the foot which needed the build up. One mile into my first run in them I had to stop to walk as the pain was terrible, on the outside of my right knee and the instep of my right foot. By the time I got home I could hardly bend my knee and the pain was terrible, this lasting for the past 5 days. My first thought is that it is friction on my ITB due to my leg and foot being 'straightened' by the shoe. Would this be normal??? Does anyone have an idea about what it may be? Thanks
you're probably a pronator... search in google for foot pronator or fasciitis plantaris.... the footpain is probably a fasciitis plantaris and the knee a meniscal lesion because of the way you put your foot on the ground. insoles are the solution for it if you have this syndrome... inform yourself

      Hoping to Run Again :-(

I guess the first thing I wonder is whether you were running pain free before the new shoes, or was pain your signal to buy the new ones? Maybe this is a continuation of your previous injury? I'm no expert, but if this pain is being caused by your new shoes, it makes me question your "diagnosis" from the gait analysis. Stability shoes to correct over-pronation should help you - not cause other problems and certainly not in a single mile of training. So if that's the case, my suggestion is to ditch the shoes full-stop until you get a second opinion. I had a pedorthist look at the shape and arch of my foot (I have hereditary bunion problems) and sell me stability shoes once and I developed knee pain after a month of running in them. That led me to a proper gait analysis at a running store and my beloved neutral cushioning shoes, which have never caused me problems. Was it a video analysis that you could watch? I know for me I was shocked to "see" myself totally neutral, even supinating a bit when I'd been told I "must be" an over-pronator. Sorry I don't have a solution - take care!

Maybe you have a broken needle in the ligament? Big grin Well I did! My first attempt at running 6 years ago ended after about a year. Two reasons, PF developed in my left foot (Which I had severly broken 15 years earlier) and a painfull swelling in my right knee. Well after an xray, ultra sound, bone scan, two Dr visits and One specialist visit. I got the news "Who stabbed you with a needle" says the specialist. WTF? I don't know says I. So he shows me the xray, a broken needle about an inch long and it had broken into 2 pieces. Bad news was he wasn't going to take it out just because I couldn't run. "Swim" he says. Apparently he claimed more damage could result from digging around in the ligament. The knee doesn't bother me at all anymore. I guess my first attempt at running broke the piece in half and the now two smaller pieces are having no effect on the mechanics of the ligament. Either that or the darn Aliens came back for their needle. Seriously no idea how it got there.

Maybe this article can help you: http://scienceofsport.blogspot.com/2008/03/running-shoes-solution-or-problem.html Read also other articles of their "Read our series on running shoes" on right column (little bit down). Maybe you should try light, thin and soft sole shoes with no cushioning at all. For example: New Balance RC152 ADIDAS - adizero PR ASICS - Piranha SP ADIDAS ORIGINALS - SAIGON

Thanks for your input guys, Changed my shoes to a nuetral and the pain is history. I did incorporate more stretching before my run which I'm sure has played a part in reducing my discomfort. Science of sport is a great site by the way. thanks again
