This isn't exactly "Stump the Swamp", but I have no clue what I can really go for as far as a Marathon time goes.

Stats:

  • 3 months of 260+ mile weeks months
  • 20:52 5k PR in September in warm (humid and 79) conditions.
  • Very manageable 58:46 8-mile tempo (10-miles total in 1:17:46) yesterday
  • Marathon on November 7 in Indianapolis.

My only hesitation is that I really didn't have many recent longer medium/hard workouts (beyond 2-3 miles of faster running) until yesterday.

I assume that in the right conditions, 3:39 is too soft a target.  I was thinking to stretch for 3:30, but now I'm looking at what I've accomplished and started thinking that *not stretching* for something faster would be a complete waste of my training.

Any thoughts?

Faster, for sure. If you a little more pace specific work over the next two weeks, keep the miles up, sub 3:20 is not outside the realm of possibility.

Based purely on that, I'd say shoot for sub 3.

I'm going to join a group of local runners going at 3:15 pace. I think you can hang with that. Your miles aren't that much different than mine. Just a thought.

Yeah, I'll give you +1 on that, too.

I may consider that--I'll play with some pacing first.  My biggest disappointment at the end of my 3:39 Flying Pig was that I felt that I had 5 more miles of running left in my legs.

I would think 3:30 is conservative given your very solid mileage and 5k, but as your tempo was on a treadmill it's hard to know how representative that was.

Ben does all his tempos on a treadmill... as do I.

Just sayin.

It's damn representative.

But you also do moderate and hard runs on the roads too, so you know it's representative for you.

His recent "longer medium/hard workouts" seems to have been limited to the treadmill only.

I think you should push for 3:20-21.  It would be a great breakthrough. Congrats on your fantastic training so far.

if i'd have though about it, I never would've done it, I guess I would've let it slide.

Not to hijack here, but wait an effing minute.  This makes me rethink my 3:28 as too soft.

MTA:  Strings, no real experience here, but I would think it depends on how willing you are to crash and burn if it doesn't work out.  Maybe I just answered my own question.

MTA again: Pay no attention to this post.  This my version of tweaking the day before I leave.

Does it really matter?  I'm not being a wiseass, seriously, does having a bunch of yahoos on the internet try to narrow the target really make people feel better?

I think if you're actually well trainend then you probably have a really solid idea what you're capable of--within a small range.  But even if you don't...you're going to run what you're capable of as long as you don't do anything stupid like stick to a preconcieved pacing plan that takes you out too fast even though your body is telling you it's too fast (or at least it would be if you'd listen to it instead of staring at your pace pracelet and garmin.)

Do this: when the race starts, go out at a pace you feel like is about the fastest you can maintain for 26.2 miles or so.  Take constant inventory of your body and your surroundings.  At the end you sould expect it to get quite hard.  When this happens, just go like hell until someone wraps you in mylar.

Fuck all.

And, also, basically I agree with both Jeffs.

Good point, Mikey.  Always appreciate the candor.

I guess my main problem at this point is that I've been tweaking since March.
