So I tried some of that speedwork stuff (Read 214 times)

that you are always going on about....

1 mile warm up, 10x800m, 400m jog rec in 3:00, 0.5 mile warm down

Splits:

3:30, 3:29, 3:25, 3:20, 3:18, 3:18, 3:16, 3:16, 3:15, 3:12

I realise that they are not particularly fast, but it felt like a hard workout so it must have been doing some good I guess!

Looking at it now, I did a classic Yasso workout - but am certain that I am not in shape to run a marathon in under 3:30 - goal remains a sub 4.

Non ducor, duco.
I guess I should try that stuff!
In search of trouble.
Nice workout!

Thanks Mike. Next one I'm going to try some mile repeats. Kind of enjoyed the 800s... actually I really enjoyed them. Focus was on relaxed "floating" speed rather than all out effort, and main aim was to have gradually reducing times for the splits. Aims achieved.

Those are faster than my 800s and I can run a 3:40. I'll bet you can do a 3:30....

You have the speed. Keep your weekly mileage consistent and maintain speedwork and you should nail 3:30, and easily.

Thanks guys, that's very encouraging. Two things that, I think, make a 3:30 out of reach; 1) I have not managed any consistent long runs 2) the marathon I'm doing is a trail race over quite a hilly course with an overall elevation gain.

However, maybe I should HTFU?

10 x 800m is about as good a predictor of marathon time as doing a set of max pushups.

But it was a good workout.

Agreed. Burt Yasso may not ... but let's not go there. I certainly didn't run them as a predictor, just realised afterwards that it was a classic Yasso session. Knowing how tough the course is, my goal remains somewhere between 3:45 and 4:00. I'll probably go out at about 8:15 / mile ish and just see what happens.... IE wait until I blow up.

Yasso 800s is not a predictor workout, and he never intended them to be.

What the workout actually is meant to be is a diagnostic tool to gauge your training and see if your time goal is realistic or not. If you want to run a 3:30 marathon, you train and use the Yassos as a way to see if your training is matching your time goal or not.

IE predict your time?

Once again... I did not run that session as a predictor... I didn't even realise they were Yassos.

Sorry. I just got back.

Doesn't matter, anyway.

Don't worry. Just lurk for a while. You'll soon get the hang of it.

(Welcome back btw)
