Should I panic? Because I feel like I should.

This is what my oldest son (17 y/o ) is electing for his career choice in the Marines. We sign the paperwork tomorrow, he heads to Harrisburg on Thursday.

Undecided

Am I missing something about all this?

He's probably going for his physical. He will go to Boot Camp at Camp Lejuene me thinks.

And I was 17 all the way through basic until the last week. But then I got out of high school a semester early.

so you can be in basic and high school at the same time? Or do you finish one then start the other?

He'll go to Harrisburg to do entry level testing and such, to make sure he's fit for the military and that he understands what he's about to do..etc. He's able to enlist now and finish up his senior year of HS. He'll meet up with local Marines once a week during the school year to begin training. Next June he'll head out to basic and AIT. Undecided

Complicated answer. If you're in the national guard or reserves you can go through basic during the summer between your junior and senior year and then go through AIT after high school.

I was in the regular Army, which means I was stupid. My last day of high school was like the first Friday in January 1989 and I left for Ft. Benning the next Tuesday. Talk about culture shock.

Anyway, by May I was already done with Basic, AIT, and Airborne school when I went home on leave for my high school graduation.

ok. But it's not like you finish HS on a base somewhere. They just make it work.

He was told he'll be going to Parris Island, but we haven't seen that in black and white yet.

That's right. I got them confused. The Island is in NC. The other one is in California. They used to send you to either base depending on which side of the wait for it....Mississippi you came from.

I started Basic (Army) when I was 17, turned 18 two months later, but I had graduated HS at age 17 so that wasn't an issue. Fort Jackson for Basic. Fort Devons for AIT.
