I'm running the Great Cranberry Island 50k on Saturday.  This should be interesting.

Since the Exeter Marathon in April, I've been trying to limit my mileage to 40-50 miles per week.

As a result, the only times I've run over 12 miles since then were at the Pineland Farms 25k at the end of May, and then a 12.1 mile mountain run the next weekend at the beginning of June.

So...I haven't even come close to running even half that distance for months other than in one race, although I have had a couple days to get up to 13 or 14 miles between warmups/cooldowns/race so I got that going for me...

Add to that the fact that the race doesn't start until the middle of the day to allow time for the ferry ride to the island, that the island has a single 2 mile road that you run back and forth on for the entire distance, and that it's been really humid lately and this has all the markings of a good time. I think.

As for goals, I have no idea what to expect, but I've run 3:51 at Pineland Farms before, which I imagine is a much tougher course, and the course record here is 3:57, so I just want to try running under the course record.

Note that I don't expect to set the course record, just to run under it.  Marathon Junkie is going to be there for his first ultra, so I figure that I'll get to run with him early in the race and then watch him smash the course record as we pass each other going back and forth.

One of the big motivations for running this race is to see what it might be like to do a 24 hour race what with the short laps for a long distance, but without committing to more than about 4 hours or so of running.  Plus, despite being on a road, it actually sounds kinda fun.  I'm already looking forward to jumping in the ocean after I finish and camping out the night after the race on the island.

I've also already started lining up a massage for next Tuesday. I think I might need it.

This is a 2 person team relay race.  Each person kayaks around a set of buoys out in the bay, and races a 5k.   22 teams total.

It's nuts that Great Cranberry has a race,  much less an ultra.   I was out there last week on vacation and was wondering how one would run.

Perhaps you'll see the seals every loop,  that might keep you entertained as you run back and forth, back and forth.

Goal: again, not embarass myself, and maybe run under 20:00.

I'm in Cincy for work, so I might as well run free races.

If it makes you feel any better, I'm probably not in the kind of shape I need to be in to do that.  I just worded it that way because a year ago I did run 6 minutes faster on a tougher course.  So, I'm hoping that it somehow translates.

Try to imagine growing up on the island...Gary Allen used to run 70-80 miles per week on the island. Apparently, it made racing off the island pretty easy in terms of head games.  As for the seals, that'd be cool.  Either way, I can look over at Cadillac Mountain and wave at President Obama each loop as he's coming up for a 3 day vacation. I told Gary to invite him to come race, but somehow I doubt that he will.

Ok...this is too much. There's someone here who has actually been to Great Cranberry Island???  That's amazing.

Despite the name "Great" this is a small hunk of rock of the coast of Maine -- small, like 50 residents. Small, like they have to limit this 50K to 70 runners because that's all that can fit on the island.  Small, like less than 1 mile by 1/2 mile or something.

Running 50K here looks about the same as running 50K in a phone booth...

Did an angel whisper in your ear and hold you close and take away your fear...In those long last moments

Should be able to get to the 5 miler in time.

Oromia is good race w/ ~$5000 in prize money. I won't be seeing any of it unless I also carry a shotgun.

And you know sometimes it gets so painful Just like talking to yourself When everything don't seem to have no rhyme or reason We all go Do do loo do do, do do loo do do Waiting for the sun to shine

This is sounding promising. Someone notify youtube to send a camera crew.
