Monkey Idiots 2012? (Read 3530 times)

Whoa now.  I may run Monkey but I'm done with marathons.

I done with marathons too...so why did I just google Flying Monkey Marathon and think, "so how do I get there?"

and now I know where Trent got his avatar!   Yeah, I know way behind the times...

    http://www.flyingmonkeymarathon.com/

this is the race you all are talking about right?

    Fast is better than long

      We'll count that as a Willie's IN

And yes that is the "race"

      2013 Goals: 2500 miles / 2:45 marathon? / sub 2 800m / 4:30 mile / sub 16 5K / sub hour 10 miles

      Give a man a fire and he'll be warm the rest of the night;
Set a man afire and he'll be warm the rest of his life.

      What in the Jehu?

        Yes, Yes it is.

        1)  Stay at Micro-tel - Many out of town Swampies do.

        2)  Probably a flight from MN

        3)  Possible coordination of rental car - with other flying swampies

        4)  Take Monday off - Yes I know you do not drink or not much - But it is a hoot going out Sunday night and we can always use another Designated Driver

        5)  There is a peoples' buffet post race - Everyone brings something to share.  If you fly - Then you are allowed to be not creative.  If you drive it is expected to bring a taste of home to share.

        6)  No keg can be tapped before noon in TN (Silly State) - So if you wanted a beer before noon - bring your own.

        7)  The race is hard - But not brutal ... although your quads are really going to be pissed off at you.

        8)  The park is beautiful, but not many flat areas - either going up or down

        9)  Many aide stations - Nice volunteers

        10) You want a crotch monkey - So run hard - Although 1st masters female is very possible

          Blah, Blah, Blah

This is an epic race, epic post race party and epic swamp meet up.  For me it has to be a Monday day of vacation to get full value out of the experience.  You come and meet people - Race heard - suffer - eat (peoples' buffet) - drink (post run) - nap - drink (bar) - eat (bar) - drink (bar) - drink (micro-tel).

Well when you put it like that it sounds like fun!  The problem is that I am most likely going to be coming down to this thing by myself.  Seriously everyone I talk to thinks this is just stupid.  I actually agree with them.

Let me know if I am missing anything here:

          • So I am going to drive 5 hours to go to a race in the middle of nowhere.
          • Probably have to sleep in my car because I will be too afraid/cheap to stay in a hotel.
          • May get ganged raped by hill people.
          • If I make it through the nigh my reward is to run this really hard ass course in which it will take me a painful 4 hours or more.
          • Most likely I will be running by myself for most of it since only like 300 people are stupid enough to run the damn thing
          • Chances are I will get lost since the course does not stay on the road.
          • I may get attacked by Flying Monkeys.
          • When/If I finish, I will be myself in pain because you swamp clicky types will just ignore me and it will be just like high-school all over again except I will be in tremendous amounts of pain!  Wink
          • I will be paying money for this abuse to my body.
          • I have to travel 5 hours back home, most likely in an ambulance, then come back at some point and get my vehicle.

Well who wouldn't want to do this three weeks after a marathonWink

Okay I am done whining now.  Really though this is really fucking stupid.

I dont think anyone is saying otherwise.

You are either going up or down - Don't worry about it - Think of it as an adventure.

Everything is runnable - Well I did walk "not a hill" my 1st year.

Click on Route Maps and you'll see the elevation below the first map. It's really flat on paper, assuming the paper is flat.

The 1st time I did Monkey - I just did 4-5 workouts where I would run at 4-6% for 1/4 mile on TM then take it to 0% and do 1/4 mile really fast (Rounding the hill and busting ass downhill).  Other than that I was running in flatsville (Neenah) where we have couple of over passes.  I shuffled up the hills and busted ass down hills - 3:00:46

2nd time - I had been doing loads of hills (Driving 35 minutes to a decent hill) and running up and down for a couple hours once or twice a week.  I ran 3:17.

PS - I guess I have turned into an old man runner = I love to come to a race and race hard no matter what shape I am in.  This works well since I have not been in reasonable shape for 2+ years.
