Eight ball  Paced 3:00 group for the first 20+ miles and then decided to help a 19 year old who was running his first marathon after he hit the wall just after mile 22. Best decision I've made in a race in a long time. Helping a kid through a rough part late in the race is infinitely better than finishing in 3:00 all alone.

I'm sure I finished ahead of some crossfitters...and I'm sure I finished after many.  The key to an event like this, IMO, is to do it with the right people; and I did. Right, in this case, was not fast but fun.

This is true. More arbitrary depending who's running the thread. Some people really suck at it. I always gave it to the person closest to/who met their goal or best race for their ability. A guy once won because he skipped his race and had a baby that day. There were great race performances that weekend that were deserving.

Yes, i'm still bitching about that. 3 years later.

As to my criteria, these things count in a majorily arbitrary manner:

                                • Closeness to stated objective (I throw out sandbaggers here. Like trying to run a marathon in sub-3:00 when you should really be looking at sub 2:50)
                                • Amazing raw results (let's say you are the 7th best American male in a World's Major or run an invitational meet against collegiate athletes when you're well removed from college and you finish respectably, you're probably gonna beat the guy who PR'd the 5K by 30 secs, but that's me)
                                • Amazing fortitude in the face of difficulty (Winning a 5k while having to unwrap your dog from a post; losing a shoe in the creek crossing)
                                • Amazing feats that I cannot fathom (Running the Western States 30 secs faster than expected vs. running a 5K 30 seconds faster than expected for example; however, if you ran that 5K on a compound fracture; it sways back your direction)
                                • Because the result just blew me away or at least the runner's non-reality based explanation of the feat did so.

These are my opinions and typically wholesalely rejected, by anyone with a hill of beans.
