This kind of lackadaisical attitude is what gets in the way of you contributing useful speed workouts with specific instructions for the newbies running 5-10 miles a week and wanting to know whether they should be doing 400s or hill workouts in between their tempos and fartleks.

Good link, Jeff. If I may sum up: mileage is not the key. Hard workouts plus mileage plus adequate recovery is the key. If there is any doubt, sacrifice mileage first.
