To switch to a new shoe or not to switch to a new shoe (Read 380 times)

BCR

Ok so this is actually a serious question that I am sure has been answered but I want updated opinions.

I currently run in Air Pegasus +28 that weigh 11.2 ounces.  I've been running with Pegasus's for a while now.and they have kept me from injury.  So I am very worried about switching to a lighter shoe.  Now the good news is that the new Pegasus +29 is only 10 ounces.  So I am going to give that a try.  However, I often wonder how much the weight of the shoe really matters.  So can you help me with that?  I would think losing a couple of pounds of fat would be more important than the weight of the shoe.  I read in RT at some point that 5 pounds is about a 3 min difference in overall time.

Also if you were going to switch from Air Pegasus what would you switch to?  I would only use these shoes for races with a few training runs to break them in of course.

Thoughts or comments.  I'm pretty much leaning towards just trying the new Pegasus but might be willing to waste a few bucks trying a racing shoe for a marathon.

    2013 Goals:

    • Sub 1:29:30 1/2 marathon (1:29:52 try at Heart Mini 3-18-2012 )
    • Sub 3:010:00 Marathon ()

Remind me to have a crack at my mile pr in a couple of months then.  Looks like a wr could be possible.

Is the question whether to try a lighter shoe for racing the marathon, or whether to try a lighter shoe for every day? Or both??

The Pegasus is a beefy trainer. I wouldn't run a marathon in them (nowadays, but I think I might have run my first marathon in them in like 1999.) If you are going to race a marathon in a lighter trainer or racer, I would definitely recommend doing more than a few runs in them and make sure to include some long runs and maybe a half marathon or longer race. If you have only ever run in big cushy trainers expect your lower legs to complain quite a bit at first, but you will adjust.

Weight matters in the marathon but so does protection. It's a balancing act and everyone is different. I personally would not race a marathon in a 5 oz flat (13.1 is my limit for that light of a shoe) but plenty of people do. I have generally had success with 7-8 oz. racers or trainers for the marathon. In the past, the Asics Hyper Speed and Nike Lunarracer have served me well in marathons. If I were ever dumb enough to run another marathon, I would probably run in the Saucony Kinvara but then I also do a lot of my training in them.

Like most things in running, ymmv.

How about that? I replied with a serious post to a BCR thread. Well fuck me.

HM in 5 oz. trainers?  I resented you for a good 3-7 seconds. Legit resentment.

BCR, you should buy a pair of New Balance 890v2.

losing weight will make you faster.  (not 3 mins for 5 pounds though)

lighter weight at the bottom of your lever (foot) helps, so  lighter shoe is better, as long as you get the support and cushion your frame needs.

skinny calves help too.  I have no idea how Trent can even run!!  Shocked

Thank-you for the serious post.  I was very pleasantly surprised.  You must be softening up in your old age or maybe your just not as grumpy since you are not running marathons anymore.

I think for regular running I should stick to the Pegasus no matter what.  Lack of injuries is my basis behind that.  So it is more for racing a marathon.  I looked at the Nike Lunaracer but that thing is like 5.5 ounces and sounds like it might be too light for a marathon.  Is that correct because I would not mind trying that one out assuming the tongue is long enough?

You suck. You should just quit. Jackass. Welcome back.

Lunaracer is ok for a marathon. I don't really think of them as a 5 oz trainer even though I guess they are. I wore them in 2 marathons. They have a lot more cushioning than most racers in that weight class.
