To avoid derailing that great thread, I will ask this here instead - can anyone explain this:

from an evolutionary aspect, these morals (let's say, altruism) helped us survive.

It's altruism in particular that makes me dubious about this. If I help someone, and they help me back, that may increase my reproductive odds, but that reciprocity kind of removes it from altruism?

Jeff made a good go of it.

The book I referenced in the thread, "Origins of Virtue" by Ridley Scott, has some very good interpretation of altruism in the context of nature.  But mostly it takes the form of how ostensibly altruistic acts actually benefit the individual in the long run.  Of course, this gets you wrapped around the axle if you take a hard-line on altruism to make it mean that no benefit for the individual can be derived.  But I'm pretty sure that's a dead-end.

What benefit would you have received if, say, you had lent me a watch?

You suck. You should just quit. Jackass. Welcome back.

You would stop pissing and moaning that you'd forgotten your watch?

And maybe you'd pop for my cheeze-steak for helping not miss your BQ by an absurdly small window.

Plus, the benefit has to accrue to someone who will have kids. I forget whether you're old and decrepit.

It's a 5k. It hurt like hell...then I tried to pick it up. The end.

You may (or may not) find Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors an interesting read.

Sagan and Druyan conduct a breathtaking journey through space and time, zeroing in on critical turning points in evolutionary history, and tracing the origins of sex, altruism, violence, rape, and dominance. Their book culminates in a stunningly original examination of the connection between primate and human traits. Astonishing in scope, brilliant in its insights, and an absolutely compelling read, Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors is a triumph of popular science.

Doh. Per the original thread, I see that my attempts at describing evolution as a competition between allele pools is just a restatement of this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gene-centered_view_of_evolution
