Injury question - what would you do? (Read 1211 times)

Some 400s will fix that problem for you...

Shorter repeats?  OK.  I'm game, but have never done any < 1000.  What do you suggest, i.e. n x 400 with x recovery jog / rest?  At what effort?

I think you should rest for a while.

Agreed. Maybe you can join me for some pool flailing?

Actually I feel like generally if it doesn't hurt while running, then keep running. But what do I know. Nothing. I had a quad issue that was generally ok when running and hurt like a bitch when sitting. I did some PT f that included stretching/strengthening/massage/ultrasound and was able to keep running and the problem went away.

I would love to but I don't think that Mrs. Potato Head would approve.

This sounds almost identical although less severe than what I had (have).  Mine was nerve compression and muscle weakness in the low back causing referred pain .  Sitting was TORTURE right on the upper hamstring insertion point.  Pain while running was cramping about 1/3 up from the knee, occasionally radiating down.   A long car made the leg hurt from ass to knee.

          This was my PT:

For 2 weeks avoid forward bending as much as possible. 10 times a day I did 10 +3 cobras (10 fairly smoothly up/down followed by 3 where you lock elbow and hold deep into the backbend).  Anytime I sat or bent forward I followed with cobras.  When sitting I used a lumbar pillow especially in the car.   I dont have to worry about people seeing me so when I was on the computer I put a pad on the floor and knelt rather than sitting.

For a week I cursed my PT because my pain migrated to my back instead of my leg.  But as my back got stronger the pain in my leg lessened.  Running does not seem to bother it although I did take time off until the pain was less severe.  It appears easy running helps it, but hard running can still irritate it.  I am supposed to (for the rest of my life) still do the cobras 3 times a day and I havent been.  I can tell.  I also do some back strengthening at the gym.

I still have issues with running first thing in the morning.  Sleeping/lying can cause fluid retention and increase the nerve compression.  For a couple months I made sure I was up and around for at least 1 hour and 2 sets of cobras before running.

For your purposes, 6-8X400 with 2min walk/jog recovery should do fine.  As for pace, as fast as you can and run the last one as fast as the first.  A little slower than mile race pace.

                Then 3-4X200 w/full recovery.

I think I can handle that.  I did a little test earlier this evening.  I spent the run focusing on getting more knee lift.  I think that this tightness has got me to the point where I am just shuffling along, even at tempo pace.  At the end of the run I opened it up for 2 tenths of a mile on an uphill stretch up to my house.  I just progressively went faster until I was almost at a full sprint at the end.  The good news is that I didn't feel any pain doing this, felt good actually.

So I'll do this workout next week.  I'm also thinking that once a week I should do that fast finish like tonight or at least throw in some strides here and there.  I don't know why I don't do that regularly but I think that this is a good reminder that I should.  And I'll keep working on the massage and stretching.

Thanks for the tip, spaniel.  And thanks to everyone else for their input.

September, actually, and it hasn't been bad all of the time.  It just won't go away.  I have a decent chair at work.  I am just making it a point to get up more often and stretch a little.  Maybe I should take a billiard ball into the office.  I have a bunch of old ones.

Oh, and not for nothing, but doesn't my ass get a hug?

No problem.  I figured something must have happened when it took me weeks to run you down on the YTD chart and then you dropped back a little.  You're too damn consistent for that to be normal.

I had a coworker whose eye doc told him to get away from the computer monitor for short breaks during the day.

He said "I'll try, but I get busy and forget..."

Eye doc told him to drink more water.  Huh?

                            I fly.

I am struggling with the same pain.  I bring a tennis ball with me everwhere and sit on it when it hurts.  I also have a foam roller, which has been helping and I've been doing some exercises that I found on the Running Times website.  I'll post the link later if I can.

The thing that really has helped me the most is going for a real, painful, massage from someone who knows about this type of pain and how to fix it.  The lady that I go to beat the *$%@ out of me, but the pain was greatly reduced after she was done.  I've only gone 2x, but I went from being in lots of pain and nothing is working to some pain, but not too much.

Oh, and I'm sure that my treadmill running isn't helping, but it looks like that is my only option (maybe yours too) since we are about to get another 18 inches of snow this weekend.

                              Bring it on.

That's exactly how I am reminding myself to get up off of the chair, Dawg.  It's a fool proof method.

Yeah, I'd like to get one of those massages.  The billiard ball is working pretty well, though.  That's a tough area to get at.  The trick is to cross the leg of the butt cheek you are massaging over the other knee and then lean into it.  This exposes the muscle.  Makes a big difference.

I feel sorry for you guys down in south Jersey.  They are only calling for 6 - 10 up where I am.  I still haven't ruled out running tomorrow.
