2000 miles of despondent sighing

February 11-17 Racing Thread (Read 89 times)

SELFISH, like you.

Thanks Greg/Ilene! I had been racing a friend the entire run. I inched about 10-15 seconds ahead of him miles 10 and 11. I probably could have dropped the hammer at some point during the 12th mile, but I became more concerned about saving a little something in case he made a charge. The last thing I wanted to do was flame out and lose to a rival. Excuses... I know.

That's why it's called a race. Nice racing.

    Alive & Running

1:18:55, good for 3rd OA and 1st in AG.  Took a fall near mile 3 on a stretch that was all ice and uphill.  Was digging to try to catch the 2nd place guy, but couldn't get him after the fall.  Course had a lot of turns, more than I expected. Overall I feel pretty good about the time considering the race was only one week removed from my 45 mile training run.

Nice work Don! Hope you feel nice and recovered for that 45 miler.

Ran the Daytona Beach Half Marathon today. It was a very fun race and one that I would highly recommend. The race started on pit road, went out to the beach, then finished on the speedway's start/finish line. We also go 2 tickets for qualifying by running the race, we didn't stay because it was freezing but I might do this race again next year, hopefully the weather will be better and we will stay to watch qualifying. Some of the drivers ran the race and I think Jimmy Johnson finished in the top 10. Michael Waltrip ran it fast as well. Both the DW and I PRed so it was a good day.

I know, right?  Smile  Pretty fast race with a fall in the middle and all.

Success! 20:38. I think this may be the end of my newbie's PR-every-race-streak though, I ran really hard on this one and I can't imagine doing it any harder or faster.

                        Race log here

Congratulations again.  I don't know about the HR stuff, but the pacing looks pretty good to me.

It's a 5k. It hurt like hell...then I tried to pick it up. The end.

HR spike in the first mile is not uncommon. You're transitioning your bodyout of normal and into supernormal.

If you watch the elite/sub-elite whatever you call the folks at the pointy end of the race; you'll notice they do quick pace towards sprinting before a race. A big reason they do this is so their hearts are ready to go when the gun goes off. I am not advocating that everyone must do that, but just explaing the why they do it. For some this is wasted energy, better saved for the race.

I see, thanks for the info. Maybe I should try to warmup closer to the start time in my next race. This time I did 2 miles on the TM at home about an hour before the race, I guess that's not very effective other than waking me up in the morning. My body probably returned to normal by the time the race started.

It definitely did return to normal before the race.  Your legs might have been loose, which is good, but in terms of getting the heart ready to go from normal to supernormal as PaulyGram says, it did nothing.  I'm far from elite, but I do warmup very close to race time.  Although I don't wear a HR monitor when I train or race I found that doing a warmup with a quick pickup at the end of the warmup does help me feel more comfortable with pushing a hard effort at the start of the race.

I also see racers do some fast strides in the 10 minutes before a 5K start. The jumping up & down just before the start, that some do, might help a bit too.
