Early season sickness (Read 293 times)

Almost every year I begin running and eventually I get some kind of cold or flu. Since Feb 2nd I have had streap throat (sp?) which lasted about 7 days followed closely by a ruptured eardrum and infection that has me on antibiotics for the next week. I am generally very healthy but this happens to me nearly every year as I begin upping my mileage and working toward some early spring races. Does this happen to anyone else? I am definately dropping out of contention as a leader of this group. I also think George needs to get that 100 miles. You can always take it easy the next few days following. Get some extra sleep and maybe run twice one day, it is one of those barriers or milestones we love to brag about. Great job this week!
For me it's generally after a goal race...maybe my immune system lets its guard down? I seem to get healthier and less likely to be sick the more I run. You mentioned in the other thread that you coach XC. Do you also teach? Working in a school environment would certainly pose a challenge to the immune system, it would seem.

      Runners run.

I really haven't been sick even once since I started running last March (the 20th will be the "anniversary"). And I am super prone to sinus issues. I have had some mild inner ear problems, but no true illnesses have sidelined me. I think overtraining can often suppress a person's immune system, so might you be ramping the miles up too fast? k

haha. I'll do a week of 100 miles sometime after the marathon to please you skinnyfish. Beforehand I'm not gonna risk it, though. I'm so fragile. I'm like you except instead of getting sick I get stress fractures or other major injuries every late spring.

          keep running.

WHATEVER! No one gave me sympathy when I was knocked on my ass from a flu that I ran through on my last half-marathon. Don't run while sick. It makes your race SUCKASS and also you get sicker and then you can't move. Hey I forgot to log one of my half-marathons. AH HA! I'm closer to the pace bunny than I thought! I'll catch him. Anyhow no fuckin violins from me.
running until I hit 1900 miles for the year. whether fast or slow I will just run.

Tell me about it. It kinda makes you feel like you have a gorilla 40 seconds ahead of you.
