2000 miles of despotic sighing

I got run over by a buffalo! (Read 338 times)

I am not usually the kind of person that gets caught up in this stuff, but I let the running log take over last week and now I am paying for it. Not sure what the injury is yet but it starts at my hip flexer and raps around my hip towards my buttocks. I would usually man up and take the pain, but.............it frickin hurts even when I walk. . So since I am a triathlete as well I will be spending much time on the bike and unfortunately probably the pool as well. I should be back on track next week unless I find out that I really screwed up and have a stress fracture. I am the boob!
Bummer. Hopefully a couple of days off and you'll be back in action. I don't know if it helps, but I try to think of injuries as my body telling me that rest is what will make me fastest at this point. Doesn't sound like a stress fracture to me, but I'm no doctor.
Well it's tough to push it at the level you guys are pushing it, or to achieve what you guys are trying to achieve, without occasionally stepping over the line of what your body can handle. It's part of the process. Heal fast, skinnyfish.

        Runners run.

        You'll ruin your knees!

Ouch! Sorry to hear you're hurting...good luck with the bike/pool...speedy recovery! Lynn B

Run through it. Sheesh. Boob. Well, that and give me a chance to catch up. And feel better.

Yeah, it's so easy to let the log (and the race for 2000) take over your life. It was also getting me, so I took last Friday off completely and yesterday did some hiking hill repeats. I feel fresher today...I plan on including more easy days in the future with my 50 mile race only 4 weeks away. Also I do have to remember that I am now 55...but thinking I'm still in my 20's! Get well quick! rest is good! Steve
              Life is short, play hard!
Skinnyfish...whats the word this week. Hope everything is mending up well.

                keep running.

Yeah, hey how are you doing Skinnyfish? I had the same injury. It hurts really bad. I got mine after the marathon. During the recovery period after the marathon it hurt like hell. I hope it doesn't come back. I wonder if it's from overstriding? Anyhow stretch it a lot, that's what I did. Sometimes the stretching made it worse. For me all injuries just come and go... I don't know why...
running until I hit 1900 miles for the year. whether fast or slow I will just run.
I havn't been on the forum for a while and it was nice to see the concern, I do appreciate it. I spent 90 minutes with the physical therapist on Tuesday, and eventually decided that I do not have a stress fracture. I believe the problem started in my left leg where I have had IT band problems for years. I started compensating for a little pain in my knee and running mostly on my right leg. The therapist pointed out that my right quad is significantly larger than my left. (not something I look at very often, or ever) Well that also led to some other muscle imbalances; weak glutes, hamstrings, etc... I am working very hard on strengthening those area's and maintaining my fitness through cycling. I have become a triathlete over the last 10 years so the cycling is enough of a replacement that I am not driving my wife crazy. Once I am able to jump on my right leg without pain I will begin running. Today is my 7th day without running and I am pretty bummed. I am going to have to pass up one of our area's biggest road races (Bloomsday) but if all goes well there is a Marathon at the end of May that I would like to do. I really just stumbled onto this group and website at the beginning of the year. The site itself is great, but this group can't be matched. What a great and diverse collection of personalities. This is just one of the many reasons I lvoe running and the running community. Muse, you could have nailed it right on the head with the overstriding. I spent way too much time on the treadmill this winter and early spring. Overstriding is a big problem with the treadmill, it also helps to create the muscle imbalance because of the backwards motion. I'll be back, but for now I have my indoor trainer and the first two seasons of Lost.
skinnyfish-- Good to hear that it's not a stress fracture. And sounds like if you get those imbalances cleared up, you will be able to run more efficiently. Awesome that you are hitting the bike. I always have to mope around a bit before I motivate to cross-train. If you can maintain your aerobic shape and get those muscle issues cleared up, I bet you can jump right back in without missing a step. Meanwhile, I'm going to keep piling on the miles. keep running.

hey skinnyfish, so sorry to hear about your injuries. you're being smart and resting. when you described your injury I thought to myself, now that's the one really bad injury I've had since starting up running again. I am not sure if you are doing speedwork on the t-mill but I had to one day and I pushed my 800's really hard and wound up overstriding and getting that groin, back, wrap around pain that you have. I learned my lesson that the t-mill is no place for speedwork 'cause it really does promote weird form. sounds like you have really good care too. I know my left quad is basically shot 'cause I have some deep muscle damage on it. When I'm falling asleep at night I can sometimes feel twinges of weird dull... pain?... in it. Anyhow I know what you mean about favoring one leg. I've been doing a lot of mindful running. Paying super close attention to form. So in a way an injury like this is good because you'll wind up running more economically. I run with a heart rate monitor and when I pay attention to form my HR drops significantly. Obviously you are a more experienced and faster runner than I am (by leaps, bounds, and eons) but, heck, if I can comisserate (spelling, too lazy to check) ... heck that's what I'm here for. For me stretching made it worse and careful attention to form just helped it heal on its own. best of luck my friend. you'll always be the 2000 mile tatter queen avatar man in my book Wink

Like the others, glad to hear it's not a stress fracture. Good job on the cross training, something that can easily be overlooked for the 2000 mile hopefuls... oh, and we "lvoe" you too! Lynn B
