This was my first ultra, in 2008. I thought I was in shape for 10:00 then; I ran 11:47. It's finally time to get my revenge. Oh yeah, 8,700 9,200 ft. gain / loss.

Ran 9:47:29. I had to check the seconds on my 2008 time -- a PR by 2 hours and 3 seconds.

I'm way better trained for hilly ultras now, but the course is still damn hard. There are only two hills -- the first mountain, and the second mountain. So all the descent basically comes in two big chunks, the first of which is on technical stuff just daring you to take a nasty header, after a few thousand feet of quad pounding. I must have tripped 50 times. Fortunately, I never fall, ever.

Oh yeah, and Sage Canaday, running his first 50 miler, beat Krupicka's course record of 6:25, with a 6:16. Of course, Ellie won the women's race (but surprisingly, no course record).

    MTA corrected elevation.

MTA: views like this (Mt. Rainier) are one reason this race is a local favorite.

Geez, I wish I could run that fast on the much easier 50M I do. Nice job.

It's a 5k. It hurt like hell...then I tried to pick it up. The end.

And in case I don't have time, my goal for the track 5000M the day after tomorrow is 18:30 paced with running buddy, switching at 800s. (This isn't a tough enough goal to be 8-ball worthy, but I'll still be anxious, I'm sure.)

          Fast is better than long

total fail! Went out way too fast... Hilly course... Small field... I was on track until a big downhill around 2 miles, and then just felt the wheels coming off. Almost just bagged it on the big hill at 2.7.

OK.  MTA...  I am over being pissed off and disgusted with myself...  Kind of...

Really small field with the 8 people ahead of me being sub 20, and then nobody within a minute behind me, so basically a time trial once I fell off those ahead of me.  First 1/2 mile was gradual uphill, but somehow I was at about 6:45 pace through that point, because I'm a fucking idiot.  Pretty sure that doomed me.

I backed off and wrapped up mile one about 7:01, but then I was in no man's land.  Big downhill late in mile two felt like it trashed my quads and I just wanted it to be done because I knew I was fucked!

7:20ish mile 2, and then gritted my teeth through the rest, but the big ass hill from 2.7 to 3 miles just felt like a mountain climb...  Close to 8:00 pace for mile 3 and then a little pissed-offedness for a run to the mat.

I need to figure out what 5K pace should feel like in the first mile...  I always go out too fast and die or too slow and feel lke I left 30 seconds on the course..  Guess I just have to run more of them, and maybe a flat one sometime!

I don't see a time in here, actually there are several, but I am not adding them up.

OCD  If you don't laugh ...

Not sure how to classify this since it's not technically a running race...got talked into it by a couple of friends..not sure WTF I was thinking

                When: Saturday 7/28

                Where: Middlebury Vt

What : Bitter Pill 12 hour Adventure Race ...basically they hand you a map and you need to find checkpoints using a compass and altimeter (NO GPS allowed). It consists of trekking, orienteering/navigation, mountain biking, swimming, rope climbing, etc..you need to get to each transition before the cutoff time or you get kicked off the course

Goal: Get to the finish line with all checkpoints ticked off before the 12 hour time cutoff...not get injured and fuck up my marathon training

Still waiting for official results to be published, but didn't meet goal.

Team was in 4th place after 7 checkpoints...maybe 5 minutes behind the lead team..then went to hell in a handbasket..spent over 2 hours looking for checkpoint 8...navagation is critical in this type of race and we blew it...decided to just move on to the next point..flew through the next several points, one of which was a crazy rope traversion over a waterfall and gorge...was having a blast ..then we came to 5+ miles of single track very technical mountain biking..I suck at mountain biking and was assured by my team that there was no single track (guess it was new this year)..after almost falling off a cliff I decided it was best to just push my bike for 5 miles up and down a mountain...and got stung by some yellow jackets..not fun..hit the last couple of checkpoints and crossed the finish line 6th in just over 9 hours....not sure where we ended up officially since we missed a checkpoint and skipped the (3) bonus checkpoints..which were right after the mountain bike fiasco...all in all it was a lot of fun, but not sure it's something I would do again.

                        Fast is better than long

Ok it's time to bestow an Eight ball.

First off, great week by all runners, it seems like the dogs days of summer are upon us and nobody PRs in July. So thanks for getting out there are trying.

This week is T-U-F, tough. Knowing my affinity for the shorter track events, AP and DnR both had miles faster than projected. AP was within 7 seconds of his PR from last year and DnR crushed his PR by 12 seconds in those short events seconds are an eternity.

This we have Bob with a 2 hour course PR. Hell Ilene barely ran that long this week. Add to that extendedsolos 5 minute PR on a 7 mile course (42 secs/mi).

Runnerclay also beat his objective so *clap* *clap*

                          I think I flummoxed here.

                          thinking, thinking

Bob just got one , but hell he deserved it and he'd deserve this one too, but it's not a cumulative award

How do you not give it to a miler with a 3 sec/qtr PR?

That Bix course is tough and it's loaded with talent, Doh!!!

                          thinking, thinking

And the Eight ball goes to extendedsolo. I just can ignore the gains and the per mile improvement, CONGRAT!

HMs: DnR and BHearn, great efforts guys

Best story of the week is Eric's Snipe Hunt. I bet his teammates are laughing still about that one.

                              That is huge -- congrats.

                              Fast is better than long

Wow! I had a huge mathematical error this morning. I am not changing the Eight ball, but I internally calculated Bob's gain as 2.x secs/mile. Damn "times 60" really makes a difference.

Bob ran 2.24 MINUTES/mile faster than his previous effort on the course. This was a big miss on my part and I don't want to deminish extendsolo's victory, but BHearn has been on a truly amazing roll here lately. Keep it up Bob.

Now there could be a back story here, like he really sandbagged his first effort so this is not as amazing as it should be, but all earlier declarations stand.

To the rest of you who didn't speak up, F U.
