I've seen both the 3D and the 2D. I couldn't tell the difference in terms of frames per second. The movie looks great in either format.
I have a similar opinion to bhearn but movies always disappoint as compared to a book. My main criticisms of the movie are the depiction of Radagast and the battle scenes that border on comedy due to their length. Other than that it seems to deliver on its promise.
And Clive, it wasn't that we weren't trying to get laid as well.
