Fast is better than long

So I have a triathlon in the books.

Going in, I thought I would struggle on the swim and excel at the bike and run. It was an indoor tri where you have static times for each discipline and total distance is the metric for winning. 10 minute swim, 20 minute bike and 15 minute run

I expected I could get about 20 lengths in, but I was able to push out 23.

I expected to get in about 7 miles and got in 7.81, but the rest of the real triathletes were getting 9+, there may have been a 10. I was out classed

On the run I thought I could pull back some people, but I was not going to reverse a 2 mile deficit. I ran 20 laps for 2.5 miles.

I did not feel comfortable on the bike, I seldom do on a stationary, but I need to learn that.

My total distance was 10.637 for 3rd in AG

    My AG top 3

    swim

    25 yds

    bike

    run

    200m

    track

    total
    first place 26 lengths 9.22 18 11.839
    second place 27 lengths 8.92 18.25 11.585
    third place 23 lengths 7.81 20.00 10.637

I'm ok with this for a first attempt, but I am gonna really work the bike the next two weeks.

    2013 Goals: 2500 miles / 2:45 marathon? / sub 2 800m / 4:30 mile / sub 16 5K / sub hour 10 miles

So the cop didn't stand at the wrong intersection this year? Wink

Nope, the got it right this year.  Tough headwind the first ~7 miles going up Shepard Rd, but after the turnaround the tailwind made it feel almost too warm.

Hope your leg heals soon.  What's up next for you and Ben?

how did they set up the bike part? i have never done any stationary bike racing but having been on a stat bike many times i know there are all sorts of ways to set one up.

It was a lifefitness bike. I think it had magnetic resistance. The only moveable part was the verticle on the seat. So the crank position to arms was very fixed and probably no fun for shorter folk. Also you could not move the seat forward or back ward. It also had a big balooned tri-corner seat.

I'm not making excuses, because all teh competitors had the same "type" of bike. But I think I need to find a comfortable cadence, "gear"/level and position.

it was basically a early version of this bike

You can only see the time, cadence and total distance, there is no MPH allowed, no standing allowed.

          Fast is better than long

This was not an easy week, there are a lot of great results to consider.

            We had a PR!

            An overall winner

            a few AG placers

            Some super fast times

The result I am most interested in (jhorner cactus to clouds) has not shown up yet. So where to start? Ilene is on a roll and grabs another PR running 10 minutes faster than projected, sandbagger! Greaso ran just under what he projected and WON the race. In the process, while he did not find John, he did find out who John was. Amcniece alo finished near the top of the leaderboard in his race and beat his projection, by the narrowest of margins. pfiese beat his projected time by over a minute and I liked the guts to ride it out even after losing contact with the pace group. Speaking of losing contact, Jeff win's write-up of the week and he had one heck of a field to try and keep up with. He finished about 12 secs per mile less than desired, but that's a time that NOT many post college kids run, awesome effort even after loosing contact. Don S. gets a Good Samaratin award for giving back and pacing. he hit dead in the middle of his projected finish range, but I just can't award him the MFEB if he only collected two free beers. Great job Don, and keep that mileage rolling. L_Master also ran a great time 6:20 on a rugged course is nothing to sneeze at.

I am really torn, because nobody mailed it in this week.

The Eight ball is going to go to greaso84 for being the RACE WINNER. I hate to do that to Ilene, but winning a race has to count for something. He took on all comers this day and remained standing.

1st runner up and HM goes to Ilene. Nice PR and the 10 minutes ahead of projection is great too.

I cannot find a reason not to grant HMs to everyone else as well, but alas I cannot.

Pfriese, AMCNeice, Jeff, Don & L_Master you put up gallant efforts.

I'll award myself an "also ran", because the only person to outdistance me on the run this week was 10 yrs my senior, and I can't allow being gramped to be rewarded Embarrassed

Great job Paulygram, I fully concur that Greaso84 got it done!  Congrats, Greaso84!

+1 and congrats to greaso84 on the WIN.

Cactus to Clouds to Tram completed! Roughly 20 miles in 8:37:00. Pictures here.

Snow was the limiting factor that compelled me to finish at the tram instead of at the trail head. There was enough of the white stuff between the Ranger station and the peak that I lost  the trail on a few occasions. Also it was deep enough in places that I needed more than micro spikes to keep from breaking through the surface. So if you're going for a record attempt, pick another time of year!

This is more of a hike than a run, but there are some sections at the top and bottom that are fairly runnable. Hikers tend to hike while the runners I saw seemed to power hike and then run when they could.

If I ever get back to Palm Springs, then I'll try and beat this guy's time:

Chatty lovefest of thousands of women runners dressed like idiots (me too) who overpaid ($140) to run a half marathon put on by Disneyland.

Yeah ... my wife's track race had just 12 people in it and not one of them was wearing pink OR a skirt. Was it technically still a women's race?

                        The process is the goal.

Maybe you should tell them that you're instituting gender testing. So you can get your speedwork in trying to escape bodily harm.

It's a 5k. It hurt like hell...then I tried to pick it up. The end.

Technically, if there is neither pink nor skirtage at a women's race, it cannot qualify as such unless at least one participant says, "Oh, I don't care about being fast," or there are Chips Ahoy! within 75 yards of the finish line or at least 3 vehicles have Runner Girl stickers on them.  Preferably, one of the vehicles should be a pastel green VW Bug.

Huh. I've only ever seen one runner girl sticker. It was on the car of one of the few females I know to break 17. Other people have these stickers then?

It looks like the race fell well short of the criteria to be classified as a women's "running activity". There's always a lot of whining about training being compromised due to acute IT Band soreness, PF issues, iron deficiency and any other number of new-found dietary intolerances.

But as for the caring about being fast, most would sacrifice their first born (either actual or planned) for a PR.
