How does a 10k a few weeks back go better than a tapered HM?
1.) I think tapering is way overrated for mid-mileage runners like us--it can hurt more than it helps if you overdo it.
2.) Your first 4 miles were a little hot--if you'd run 6:07's for the first 4 it probably would have been a totally different last 4 and result.
And really, 1:21:39 is not terrible compared to the recent 10k, it's within the range of what you'd expect with the vagaries of good days and bad days. Keep on truckin'.
(not sure if you were really asking or just venting, but anyway, that's my 2¢.)
Runners run.
Results for Black Cat 10 Miler
Not quite as fast as I had hoped but I got crap for sleep the past two nights and wasnt feeling good the night before.
Went out just about on pace for the first few miles (6:45 or so pace) but after the 5 mile mark I fell apart and could barely hold 7:00s. It was still a minute and a half PR but this one just didnt feel as good as last year. Came in at 1:08:07
2:21:02 for 20 this morning at the Black Cat. I'm very satisfied with that and am happy to report that I did not die.
Nice to see Jeff out there too.

Chamberlain Half Marathon March 4th Goal: under 1:25 closer to 1:20 or so. No solid goal except to run under marathon pace..no taper leading into this one except two relatively easy days followed by another hard week next week and another half marathon.

Not a certified course but ran a PR of 1:17:52..felt easy even though i had some Achilles problems. Lots of great people out there today.
How do people feel about non-certified courses. should they be counted towards your personals bests, even if they are long (or short )?

Smokin.
Your watch went with 13.24, if you stopped it somewhere close to the finish, I'd count it as a PR.
Most certified halfs, I end up right around where you did with milage.
Thanks MikeyMike. I think you're right and I appreciate the advice. The taper was a bit long (10 days). Perhaps next time just take it easy the day or two before the race. While I think I'm good at finishing a race strong when everything is working, its much harder to salvage things. I knew it was a bad day at mile 2, but still didnt cut things down enough.

Tapering is a convenient label when you're busy and appreciate getting the time back - I'll say that.
It's a 5k. It hurt like hell...then I tried to pick it up. The end.

Name Distance Race Goal Result Comments NemoME 13.1 miles Chamberlain March Half Marathon <1:25:00 Old soft PR of 1:27:something. More of a tempo workout than a race, I hope.
Hope springs eternal. Managed 1:23:01 whilst getting my doors blown off by some kid named Highonrunning. HighonEPO if you ask me.
Somewhere around the 7 mile mark, the competitive juices took over and the whole tempo workout thing disappeared...the last 6 were a solid race effort.
You should go get the clap just so you can give it to her. --beef
I went for it. Ran 1:27:06. I think I might have had the < 1:25, but the wind was horrendous. No tornadoes... this was all in a straight line. M12 was 7:18 (should be 6:29)! It was like running into a wall of wind. So, fail, but I will take it given the conditions. Definitely would have been a solid PR day with better conditions, and likely < 1:25. 6:29 pace felt OK when I wasn't running into the wind.

Nice, sounds like you kicked some ass despite the conditions.

Taper - But how you taper can make the difference. Taper = less mileage, but not less effort - THat whole leg tension thing. You can end up with mush legs from taper.
I have never figured out a taper that works for me ~ I do a taper plan and feel great, so I taper the same way the next time and I feel crappy.

The social side of running is half the fun for me, the other half is trying to figure out what the hell I 'm doing. I get the feeling I'll never get it figured out, but that's OK too.

A fabulous weekend of racing!
jeffdonahue - Phil's kid, ran an awesome race and got a PR! (but didn't quite hit his stated goal)
Nemo got his PR and blasted his goal!
bhearn should have PRd if only that blasted wind has cooperated (and being the only one of these candidates I have hugged on was a inside favorite)
parklife left his brain at home and even though he didn't do so well this week, may fit in very well here
Daddyo got a huge new PR, but needs to hang out here more, 'cause we miss him.
highonwhatever blasted his goal, and needs to provide a urine sample; who is this guy?
cross xchris blasted the heck out of reach goal and PRd!!
pfriese did an excellent job as usual and took home some geezer hardware.
amcneice made his mom proud and didn't get caught in a tornado and lived to run another day.
So obviously.....the imaginary funking cartoon award goes to...................................
xchristopher!! for doing so well and at a greater distance. Congratulations cutie!
Proofread carefully to see if you any words out.

Aww, I'm flattered... but ...In my defense, Where's the BadDawg thread at? Last year I finished right behind him at Stu's (mid-packers), which gives me all the more respect for the run he turned in Sunday (not a mid-packer).
