Taper (Read 175 times)

I may be breaking the cardinal rule of the big brass balls/boobies group but oh well. So here is the question. Those who have a marathon coming up, what are you guys planning for your taper. I have always started mine three weeks out with the race being at the end of the third week. In the past my weekly mileage for taper has been 85% 70% 55% of my max mileage week during build up. I keep my long run on the same day but obviously shorten it to about 90 mins-70 mins. In addition, I cut down the long intensity runs and do more short speed work and shorter MP runs to speed my turnover up and get comfortable at MP. Does anyone do anything drastically different? I probably won't change my plans this time around but who know what will happen next time. What are your plans?
I'm just blindly following the training plan I've used for the last 2. http://bostonmarathon.com/BostonMarathon/MarathonTraining.asp?training=rookieprogram I'm sure there are things I could do that would be better, like getting more sleep. But that's hard to do during tax season Dead
I typically taper for 2 - 3 weeks. I plan a 2 week taper but had an extra high milage week for me culmonating in my long run three weeks before the marathon. This week will be a standard higish week, then two weeks of taper. I will reduce the total miles to about 80% then 25% (not including the marathon) but will keep the intensity about the same. So for me, my final weeks are about (total miles / long run length) (55 / 21) <- high="" milage="" for="" me="" (45="" 18)=""></-><- normal="" milage="" for="" me="" in="" an="" up="" week,="" with="" 1-2="" up="" tempo="" runs="" (38="" 12)=""></-><- about="" 80%,="" with="" 1-2="" up-tempo="" runs="" (38="" 26.2)=""></-><- includes marathon includes="" marathon=""></- includes marathon >
Good question. I think this week I'll be down to pre-mileage bump levels (~70 miles), then maybe 60 the next week, then whatever I feel like the last week. I will do a few MP runs to try to dial it in, a couple of workouts (maybe 1000's at a little faster than MP (MP-30 or so) but with huge rest, and some 200's. I'm looking forward to the taper. The legs aren't super-tired, but I've got to get back to work on the stuff I neglected when I was running or thinking about running all the time!
