shoe tying (Read 532 times)

hello. i think i have been tying my shoes too tightly.

no, i am not shitting you here, this is an actual problem. apparently i have a sort of manic approach to lacing up, like my shoes are going to just spontaneously fall off or something. since i've had the two pair of NB that i have now, i would describe the approach as "yanking the hell out of them". i was like, hey i've got narrow feet! and, i do have narrow feet, but this was more along the lines of scarlette o'hara clinging to the bedpost whilst mammy corsets her up. what the hell was i doing??

i am sorry to say that i realise now that the tingle in my left big toe was actually my foot crying for help, but i didn't listen and now both my ankles, both insteps, and a smattering of toes are alternately hurting, tingling, buzzing, itching, et cetera. although the itching is possibly fungal, all the rest is just classic nerve stuff. i also realise now that it wasn't just the running shoes, but it was everything from keds to chucks.

i'm now reforming this behaviour, and lo & behold, NOT leaving shoes strewn across the village.

i am contrite. i am reforming.

how long till my feet feel better?!?

Not sure. I bet it wont' be long though.  A week, maybe less?

I have this issue but only with dress shoes. I was reformed wrt running shoe tying many years ago but with certain lace up dress shoes I still feel the need to clamp down those suckers down tight and it definitely causes me some issues with the old metatarsals and the instep on my left foot. Of the three pairs of dress shoes that I actually wear anymore, one are loafers and the other two are lace ups (one black, one tan.) I have been thinking of changing out my whole fleet of shoes for an all-loafer lineup but I am not sure I am really an all-loafer guy. There are still those days when I feel like I need to put on the full body armor. It's a hard world.

      Runners run.

If she tied those too tight, what would happen?

Funny - I rarely untie or retie my shoes - I leave them tied and slip them on to run.  I guess I like them loose.

I do moderately tie the racing flats when I do speed work.

            I'd say the same.

I tightened the heck out of my shoes in the 8th grade during tryouts for the baskeball team.  I was a little nervous (5' 6" and no muggsy bogues, mind you). Same tingles.

To try to clarify, do you mean laces like this:

                or like this:

It's a 5k. It hurt like hell...then I tried to pick it up. The end.

If ya gotta clamp down on the laces, then you don't really have a great fitting shoe.  If you're foot is narrow, get a narrow shoe dumbass.

heh.  Only because my running p has to special order her extra narrow shoes and then the lace them so tight that the flaps touch and they are still too loose.

I must not have an over tightening problem because lately if I am doing burpees or mountain climbers my shoes fall off eventually

thanks for the advise ilene, but clearly i have shoefalloffaphobia, so i don't think crocs are going to help.

I do tie a bit tighter for technical trail running - Just moderate and often I stop and tighten down a bit - Not sure why they lossen up?

I have kinda narrow feet and tightened the living shit out of my laces.  Had all the symptoms you listed, and a blood clot in a superficial vein to boot.  Unable to completely break myself of the habit, I tried stretchy laces (I like the iBungee brand in particular).  I can cinch 'em up fairly snug, but they still have some give to keep my feet from going all pins 'n' needles.  For the most part.  And I can adjust where the tension is/isn't without undoing them, which is nice.

I generally tie my shoes only once, the first time I wear them, and after that just slip them on and off.  It's not as if they feel like they're moving around on my foot or anything, and if I tie them too tight, I get soreness on the top of my foot.
