Injury question - what would you do? (Read 1155 times)

There is a long dark road ahead of me.

Oh boy. Jill, I think you're going to need that shovel.

If we don’t try we’ll never know. At least I can find out how good I can be.  I can have an answer at the end of the days, and have a hell of a good time with the process. -Desi Davila

I'm with Jill B on this, I suffered for 16 odd months and then a new physio freed it up in three visits by really working on the spots where it was tight and it disappeared.   I have really short hamstrings I think due to years of cycling.

Ironically after nearly a year it has come back so I've had it treated again and I'll see what happens this weekend.

I found I could cope on shorter runs but it kicked in after about 5 miles and progressively got worse as it tightened

Good luck in your quest for injury free running PH.

I might be misusing it.  I think "seasonally appropriate" was what I was looking for.

mr train you are a pain, your words - they make me go insane

they strike my ever-thinking brain like little drops of acid rain

oh, to my life you are a bane; crazy, mixed up, mr train - r2e

          I fly.

Oh boy. Jill, I think you're going to need that shovel.

Crap.  At least it hasn't started yet.

Looks like I'm running 17 on the treadmill tomorrow.  Excuse me while I rethink my mileage goals for the year.

            Bring it on.

I did a little test earlier this evening.  I spent the run focusing on getting more knee lift.  I think that this tightness has got me to the point where I am just shuffling along, even at tempo pace.  At the end of the run I opened it up for 2 tenths of a mile on an uphill stretch up to my house.  I just progressively went faster until I was almost at a full sprint at the end.  The good news is that I didn't feel any pain doing this, felt good actually.

It's interesting that it feels quite a bit better since doing this last week.  I still have some pain but not nearly as annoying.  I ran a trail race Sunday and that seemed to open things up even more.

Alas, I don't know when I'll get to the 400's as they are calling for over a foot of snow here starting tonight and I have no access to a treadmill.  Hopefully next week.

And I need to send a special shout out to Waffle House, Tanya's groin, and my buddy L Train for their valuable input.  Thanks a million.

I have really short hamstrings.  I think due to having really short legs.

What was the secret, they wanted to know; in a thousand different ways they wanted to know The Secret. And not one of them was prepared, truly prepared to believe that it had not so much to do with chemicals and zippy mental tricks as with that most unprofound and sometimes heart-rending process of removing, molecule by molecule, the very tough rubber that comprised the bottoms of his training shoes. OK, may I vent?  This thing reared it's ugly head over the weekend.  Today's run really, really, sucked.  Enough pain to alter my stride.  It radiates from my ass down the back of my leg.  It definitely feels like nerve irritation.  It never really went away but I had been keeping it at bay.  Stretching makes it worse.  Massage makes it worse.  Yoga makes it worse.  As far as I can tell.  Doing none of that stuff it seems like it doesn't get worse, but it doesn't go away, either.

This is really frustrating.  I really felt like I had a good training cycle but now I am not sure  I have this race next weekend with L Train and thank Phelps it wasn't this weekend.  If I can get the inflammation down by next weekend I have a chance.

So what do I do?  I tried running through it for close to 6 months.  It ain't going away.  Sitting a lot doesn't help and I sit a lot, so I am not convinced that not running won't help.  So if I were to go get it looked at where would I go?  I'm just thinking that something is out of place an needs to be snapped back into place.

                    Anyway, I vented.

Run easy.  And drink a home brew.

I'm running somewhere tomorrow. It's going to be beautiful. I can't wait.

Warm it up good for a few miles, then do 5-10X150m accelerating quickly to full speed, long jog recoveries so you can focus on running FAST -- darn near full sprint the last 50m.  Then stretch the hell out of it.  I think I've offered this up before.

Make sure you don't leave your wallet or anything bulky in your back pocket when you sit all day.  I've been getting this in a minor fashion again for a couple weeks now.

I tried some fast stuff Saturday at the end of my run.  I felt pain the whole time so I decided to open it up at the end.  It didn't help.  Stretching and massaging seem to irritate it.  Forward bends are the worst.  It's nerve and not muscle.  It's more ache than pain.  And it is left side ...  never have anything in my left pocket.

I'm just wondering how long I put up with this crap before having it looked at?  It's been almost 6 months off and on.  I just don't feel that time off from running is the answer, either, since sitting aggravates it.

It can't hurt to have it looked at, I'm not sure what they'd tell you to do.  The reason stretching or loosening the muscle can help is because the muscle can be what is irritating the nerve (in some people the nerve actually routes through the muscle).

If tearing it loose and stretching have both failed, I'm out of ideas. Sad
