In it for the long run..
Franklin Classic 5K 28:26. Had no goal. 3rd in age group (my last race in this age group) and won trophy and socks! Humid but cloud cover. The 17 hilly, humid miles on Saturday did not help with this.

Had a marvelous time, running on a long hot steep metal suspension bridge on a hot day!

Failure - Initial thoughts in my blog
Went without watch "By feel"
exactly where I wanted to be @ 12 hours = 323 laps
started struggling by 13 hours
fought to 100 miles
Although I had severe physical limitations after 100 miles - I was mentally weak and did not maximize the mileage within those physical issues - This is where the biggest failure came -
Once mentally cashed in - All I was looking for was the win - Thank you Mr Parker Rios for making me at least put in the effort that I did - I was going to cash in at 20 hours, but he was still giving effort, so I has ass went around until 22 ish hours and then I was close enought to 200k, that I got that job done - 200,400 meters (501 laps) in 22:15
Highlight of experience was WG and Pauly and as always spending time with the super crew of the year - My wife Jill !
Need to heal my body and mind and find my confidence.

You ran an amazing race, Dopplebock, now rest well and heal!
After careful consideration, the fabulous day had by the newbie Ultrarunner who placed 2nd and ran a phenomenal number of miles takes this week's imaginary cartoon .
Congratulations go out to the handsome and speedy PaulyGram!
Honorable mentions to Jeff and Dopplebock!
...I am very lucky that Bash and BadDawg didn't post this week also.
Fast is better than long

Not sure this was mentioned, but I placed worst of all the swampies. DB and WG are 24hr. CHAMPIONS!!! <-- Many kudos and thanks for the encouragement when running in circles had me defeated.
DB ran 501, WG ran 403, makes my 163 laps look a tad impish. Plus I still have a full complement of toes and nails.
Jeff, Great time and as XC, WOOT!!!
Handsome +1, but we like to say ruggedly handsome.

What in the Jehu?
Pauly - Say it isn't do - Retired? I am already plotting my revenge on the 24
Ultras are really freaking hard! A fact none of you mentioned.
I replayed the stoopid things I said during this adventure since leaving Germantown.
When I was approaching the 3 hour mark and contemplating taking a break for the first time: "It's only 2 hours until we change direction again". C'mon who ever says only 2 hours when referring to a segment of a race.
Nearing the end when I thought the old course record might be in reach and I had 15 laps to go. "I can do 3 miles easy". Nice math, Einstein.
When the Garmin battery died: "You just outran your watch!"
After seeing WG's toes: "At least you have all your toenails still". Really, lack of loss of body parts is a redeeming attribute of a race?
You're all nutz.
probably not really really retired, but kinda

how soon before the painful memories start to fade and all you recall is what a natural talent you have for going long?

Tonight I had surprisingly spry legs. The clubs workout was 4x800 followed by a 4 mile tempo. I having come of a stoopid ultra did not think I was up for this. I negative split all 4 halfs with my last quarter approaching 60 seconds then reeled of 2 6min/miles to close out the tempo run. I think 40.5 miles is great base for speed work.
Wait for another 3 weeks - I find 3-4 weeks post long run (5-6 hours) I get a noticeable boost in my tempo runs.
You're just a running stud. Get over it and deal with it.
