Serious question - The man is letting us out early and I thought I would pick up a bourbon as a gift for my BIL. Any recommendations that won't break the friggin bank? In addition to what was mentioned in the previous section of this thread.

 

He's not a single malt guy and thinks MGD is a good beer so I don't have a lot to work with.

Just back.  Picked up Makers Mark, Knob Creek and Elijah Craig 12.  750 ml each and all about the same price - one of the three was $3 or $4 more than the others - don't remember which one.  Total came to $82 with tax.  Still gotta get the snifters.

 

Yes, some of the better packies carry decent bourbon.  None of the shitty package stores in my town do, however.  Well, I can find Woodford Reserve (which I like) sometimes, and Makers most of the time but usually that's about it.

 

 

The best place I've found to buy bourbon, or any whiskey really, is the NH state liquor store.  They have Elija Craig 12 yr. and most of the others that Skootr mentioned, and their prices are decent.  Lucky for me I have to pass through 18 miles of NH any time I go to my sisters, or the northeastern end of my territory.

 

 

I also found a packy in Westborough called Julio's Liquors that's not too far out of my way if I go to my Mom's that has a good selection of bourbon.  I found that place when I went on a sales call there once.

 

 

I have a NH state store pretty close to my house...I used to buy most of my wine from them since the prices could not be beaten. Unfortunately, that is no longer the case. They even have a web-site. Here is a link to the Whiskey and Bourbon page:

Wine tumblers are gonna have to do 'til after Christmas.  Way too much store traffic out there today.  I'm seriously considering sipping some now ahead of my run at 4:30.

 

Use the glasses with the widest bowl and narrowest opening you have.  And then enjoy that run!

I'll just throw out there the thought that there are many experiences in life that aren't really enjoyed the first time.  My most recent observation of this was a vasectomy.

I will say this- ice is to bourbon like air is to wine. Ice is a good thing. Some bourbons are better neat, some with a cube, some on the rocks. It varies. And there's nothing wrong with adding a splash of brach water (normal water works too ) Most higher proof bourbons are made hot so that the drinker can add branch to their preferred taste. Julian Van Winkle drinks his pappy 12 with a splash.
