Mikey- It's too bad...I come from the Land of Bourbon. But, hey you wouldn't want a bottle of bourbon showing up at your house in some crayon marked box from Kentucky, now would you? I understand.

Skootr, I disagree.  Knob Creek is a solid middle tier bourbon.  Others agree.

I was lunching on some krunky hot fish today with some buddies, and center table were some bottles of Woodford Reserve Masters collection bourbons, including the Sweet Mash from last year and this year's Seasoned Oak Finish 101.  Sadly, the bottles were not opened.  I'll be ordering me a bottle or two.  They will go nicely with my Gold Label Makers Mark 101.

I'm running somewhere tomorrow. It's going to be beautiful. I can't wait.

Trent- I didn't say anything about Knob Creek, FYI- I don't hate it, I wouldn't say it's anything better than a middling bourbon that's a bit over priced. In terms of the Beam brands, I much prefer Basil Hayden's or Jim Beam Black.

About the Woodfords- The Sweet Mash was a super cool experiment. It honestly isn't really like bourbon per se. It tastes a lot more like banana bread. The way I look at it is it's a great experiment, and it's super educational to try, but am I glad I tried a glass at a bar and didn't spend $75 on a bottle? Yes. It was super risky to try out, and that took balls, but it's not some super special bourbon.

The Seasoned Oak, on the other hand is amazing. This is one seriously special bourbon. It's dark. Dark dark, and rich. It's not too high in alcohol, but has a slightly astringent nose, nevertheless it's not lacking in character. On the palette, it is rich and slightly fruity with syrupy caramel and molasses. The finish is super long, smoky and satisfying. Buy as much of this as you can. (Yes, I wrote that myself. Yes, I'm a bourbon geek.)

              Okay.  It is okay.

Yes.  I completely agree.  The sweet mash is, by definition, not a bourbon.  A nice whiskey, perhaps.  But not bourbon.  And yeah, the oak was the one I am eyeing.

Like I said, I have nothing bad to say about the sweet mash, it is not really supposed to be a bourbon, it's just a learning experience.

The seasoned oak, tho? Man. I think he knew he had to deliver a badass bourbon finally, and he did. 4-grain? Pretty decent. Sonoma Cutrer finish? Terrible corporate brand mash-up brown-forman crap. Sweet mash? Fun experiment. Seasoned Oak? Bad Ass Shit.

I haven't. I'll admit I'm interested. You know of my past issues with MM...they way they do tastings is a joke, but I'd love to try it some day.

Speaking of middle tier, what do you think of Elijah Craig, another one that I enjoy?

I'm running somewhere tomorrow. It's going to be beautiful. I can't wait.

                      Skooter MacOverlord

I think Elijah Craig is a perfect example of what a middle tier bourbon should be: Complex, compelling, not mind blowing, but well above average, and reasonably priced. The 18yr is sublime (tho not middle tier at all and super allocated) and the 12yr is fantastic.

If you like Elijah, I would highly recommend the Ezra Brooks 12yr single barrel. The bottle design is appalling, but the bourbon is absolutely fantastic and super reasonable for what you get.

In general, I have to say, I prefer a 10-13 year bourbon over older almost any year of the week. Sure, there are exceptions, but honestly I think that unless the MD is super amazing, it ends up taking way more out of the barrel than the mash, and it's not that enjoyable.
