We've Got Big Hills
Some people I know will take a shot of something before going to bed every night to help them sleep. Are you guys like that? Is that how you know so much about this stuff.
Just because your family has alcohol problems (for which, BTW, I am sorry) does not mean everybody who drinks does.
AND: alcohol actually is an excellent carb for running.
I'm running somewhere tomorrow. It's going to be beautiful. I can't wait.
Poor baby
Mikey - when you go to a packy NE can you find any of these bourbons these Tennesseeans are talking about? This review on the Woodfords Seasoned Oak makes me want to go get some, but I don't remember seeing it. I'm usually with you on the middling Knob Creek, though I also like the Jim Beam Black as well. MTA: then again, I was out getting a pizza from the place around the corner a month ago, and while i waited I ordered some Beam, which is all they had, other than Jack Daniels. Then a guy at the bar started giving me a little shit, he's from TN and I shouldn't be drinking that Kentucky bourbon. It made me think there's some sort of line drawn on bourbon between the two states, but apparently that's not so.

Yes, some of the better packies carry decent bourbon. None of the shitty package stores in my town do, however. Well, I can find Woodford Reserve (which I like) sometimes, and Makers most of the time but usually that's about it.
The best place I've found to buy bourbon, or any whiskey really, is the NH state liquor store. They have Elija Craig 12 yr. and most of the others that Skootr mentioned, and their prices are decent. Lucky for me I have to pass through 18 miles of NH any time I go to my sisters, or the northeastern end of my territory.
I also found a packy in Westborough called Julio's Liquors that's not too far out of my way if I go to my Mom's that has a good selection of bourbon. I found that place when I went on a sales call there once.
Run like a kid again!
You make the assumption just because someone takes a shot before going to bed that he or she does not care what he/she is drinking. Maybe they care just as much about the calories and what they are drinking as you do.
I was not trying to imply you were an alcholic. I was just curious on how you came up with all of this knowledge. As far as I know during the off season you belong to a bourbon tasting club which is where you recruit people to do the Flying Monkey after they have had a few too many shots.
Prince of Fatness
Those "This exit for liquor and lottery tickets" signs on I-95 cracked me up when I was up there.
There is a long dark road ahead of me.
The assumption is safe. People who drink bourbon in such a was as to enjoy its complexity do not drink it as "shots". Rather, they drink sip it slowly from snifters. Using the phrase "take a shot" implies a very different drinking experience and goal.
It is possible to learn about things without becoming immersed in their dark side. For example, I (think I) know a lot more about running than I am an experienced runner. I know quite a bit about crystal meth, but have never seen or used the stuff. I have learned a whole lot about various beers, wines and bourbons, but my actual intake is fairly limited. There is so much knowledge out there, it is easy to reach out and grab it.
A bottle of whiskey will last me months. A glass (really like 2 oz.) of whiskey will last me an hour or more. I like sipping it, and rolling it around in the glass, breathing in that spicy, oaky, fiery aroma and thinking about it sitting in a charred oak barrel for a dozen years. The care and patience that went into making it is definitely part of the appeal.
Or a good bottle of wine paired with a good meal and good company. Lordy can it get any better?
And then there's drinking keg beer out of plastic cups in a field after a road race. Just, perfect.
All great experiences. Runners tend to be sensation seekers, so it shouldn't surprise anyone that runners tend to be drinkers.
I have major league alcoholism in my family too, but that's a whole different thing than these experiences.

Yessir.
Florida
$100 total or each?
Sounds like you have Makers Mark, Knob Creek and Elijah Craig 12 or 18. With tax, that will get you about $80-100.
Imaginary Space Filler
I've been to Tennessee. Once.
me too!

I stick mostly to beer and it is usually just on weekends. I probably drink more at one sitting than these other guys, and on occasion have one too many. I agree that if you are going to drink it you want to taste it. There's nothing like a good beer.
I don't drink liquor all that often. Bottles last me months. Every now and then I'll have a drink or two. But I usually have beer on hand and I enjoy that more, so that's what I end up having.
meh
I have found that connoisseurs of beer, wine, bourbon, etc., aren't the "heavy drinker" types. They hold out for quality. Heavy drinker types (even if not alcoholics) are going for the buzz, and not the experience. Much like you find the fattest people eating the cheap quality food at the local "Chinese" buffet that has chicken nuggets, mashed potatoes, and pizza as selections.

How did we go from crossing the finish line for 2000 miles to drinking? Amazing where these threads go sometimes. Anyway, I think I have a lack of either knowledge, taste buds or both. I've never noticed the differences in say coffee or heavy drinks. I've tried coffee a few times and have never liked the stuff. I've had people say try this <insert flavor of the month> coffee and you will really notice it. I even tried the half coffee/half hot chcolate thing and tasted nothing but bad coffee.
Anyway, I am starting to scare myself as I am thinking about purchasing these three bottles. Is it better to drink (health wise) say three shots of Makers Mark or three Land Sharks?
What is a good alternative to Jack Daniels or sorry what would be high quality Jack Daniels. My brother drinks that stuff and I almost bought him a bottle for Christmas.
Are we just hitting the tip of the iceburg here with drinking. I'm surprised no vodka talk has come up like Absolut Vodka.
Last question - What is the best Porter Wine - adding in quality with price.
