Unsupported 100K race (Read 366 times)

I'm going to run my first 100K this May in Southern Minnesota: http://wilderfootraces.wordpress.com/the-races/abel-wilder/

Gravel roads, hilly, it could be hot or cold.

Unfortunately I don't think I can get away with refilling a 10oz handheld water bottle 10 times or so.

For a marathon I can get away with 0-300 calories and still have a stellar race. I don’t think that just doubling that will work for the ultra.

Any ideas or race strategies will be helpful.

Nobby says you should not use a handheld.

      What does Tunis make?

I would either preposition or carry food, I think.

It's a 5k. It hurt like hell...then I tried to pick it up. The end.

Unsupported?   Or can you have a crew?

I saw your question and it states maybe 1/2 way they will have h20 available.  It that  were the case I would chance it with a 70ounce camel back and 2 x 20 ounce hand helds.  I am a heavy sweater and I would come up short, but hopefully not too dehydrated.

I have a belt with 6x 10 ounce bottles, but I hated it and threw most the bottles away.

I think they would be wise to throw in 2 more h20 available points 1/4 and 3/4 the way.  If they have a drop bag at half way - I would take a few minutes to take in 800 calories at half way and leave with my pants full of Gu Smile

If they had drop bags at all 3 points it would become much easier ~ to achieve calories.

If I did it with only 1/2 way refill.  I would carrie 2 baggies of endurox (300 calories each) + a bunch of s-caps and @ 15 gels.  I would gel every 20 minutes with h20 out of my camel back.  I would take 1 drink out of handheld and at 100 minutes put baggie of endurox into handheld and drink.  I would go back to gel-ing every 20 minutes with camel back and at 200 minutes hit the drink a bit of h20 out of other handheld and put 2nd baggie of endurox in.  I would then continue gel-ing into the 1/2 way aide station.  Drink 600 calories of endurox at aide station and refill the gels and 2 baggies of endurox + full camelback and handhelds with h20 ... repeat to finish.

I would take a s-cap every 30 minutes (Even if I only need one every 45 minutes) because its easy to remember when to take them.

I would use valuable space to pack some TP

I would pack a second baggy of S-caps in case I drop my 1st and do not realize it

I would include some anti- squirt stuff in my baggie of s-caps just inc case.

I would wear gators as I hate gravel in my shoe.

I would practice taking a piss while not breaking stride

Thats what I would do ...

Big difference between the two.  Just because they aren't going to set up an aid station doesn't mean you can't have someone help.  Unless it does.  I'd ask them about that.

I have a Nathan hydration pack.  It is a lot more comfortable than it looks.  The first few minutes are weird and then you don't even notice it is there.  It is nice to have a space to hold a few extra gu's and some t.p.  You can also throw your jacket or extra shirt that you start off with in there.  You may need it again by the end.  Same with the headlamp.

I agree with DB about bringing electrolyte tabs.   Bring immodium, too.  (It took me a while to figure out what DB meant by "anti-squirt")  Same thing about the gaiters.  Check out dirtygirls.  Yes, guys wear them.  A small stone in the shoe can cause a big problem.  Plus it takes a ton of time to keep stopping and dumping out your shoes.

Have fun.  I love 100k's.  It is the perfect distance.
