Peterson winery, Luxton, Wellington and Imagery in Sonoma.

My Man comes through in minutes!

Thanks...Imagery was on one of the lists I'd made and Luxton looks close by.  I'm thinking swing through Sonoma and catch some of those on the south, then over to Napa and catch 3-4 more.

We lucked out, sister-in-law's BF is allergic to sulfites so no Ro Chambo for DD duties.

2012 goals:  Fastest race times since 2006.

Hey, you cut me deep man.

Besides, face it, Skootr knows more about wine than you.

Not necessarily.  But possibly.  Check out my suggestions, big guy.

In Napa, I'd recommend Darioush and Grgich Hills. Even apart from the excellent wine Darioush is worth a visit, just for the sheer spectacle.

What a day.  We lost enough time to account for an extra winery to outbound traffic on the Golden Gate but had a great day anyway.

                Sonoma:

Imagery - less common varietals.  Interesting, but nothing really stood out.  Worked it with the pouring girl and she wrote us a comp ticket to sister winery Betzinger though.  Got a Sirah that led the pack.

Betzinger - same group, but more common varieties.  Decent, picked up a Chardonnay for the wife.

Luxton - Just a laid back Aussie far from home and living his dream.  Great conversation and wine poured by the owner.  Picked up a phenomenal Port and I don't usualy like dessert wines at all so that is saying something.

                Napa:

V Satui - Much larger and more commercial but what a place.  We had to wait like 2 minutes to be helped so for some reason the pour lady took pity on us and comped tasting both the regular AND reserve lists...almost a dozen pours in all.  Outstanding wine, I liked almost all of them.  Bought enough that I shipped it home.

                  Meh.

Too bad you did not go to any of the ones I suggested.   Heck, at least even mediocre Mumm would have been a good end to your day.

Yeah, that guy is great. Did you happen to try his rose? Just fantastic dry rose with loads of fresh watermelon, tropical fruit and a little spicy on the finish.

When I was there he was hand bottling a port experiment.

As for Imagery, I think it very interesting that they are attempting so many international varietals, but their Bordeaux  blend was the stand out for me. A lot of wineries in Sonoma attempt those off the beaten path varietals, and very often the reason you don't get them outside of where they're they're typical (ie: Barbera or Nebbiolo out side of Italy) is because they quite simply don't do well in other climates/soil. Occasionally, however they hit gold. For example, Zinfandel was actually brought to California from Italy, and in Italy is still known by it's original name Primitivo, and obviously California has had tons of luck with that. But on the more obscure note, one of the coolest wines I brought back with me was a Tannat from Geyser Peak winery and it was a real slam dunk. I think that a lot of those unusual varietals do better in field blends in smaller percentages.

No, I don't think he had that anymore.  His wines are in really small batches.  Depending when we were there, we may have been drinking the port experiment.  He's switching over to screw caps now, apparently tired of the variability in corks.

I haven't had the Merry Edwards Sauv blanc, but I have had several of their Pinot Noirs, which were spectacular. I have to say, I always find it perplexing when a talented Pinot Noir producer does a Sauv blanc or when a big Cab/Merlot producer focuses on a chardonnay, as they are the opposite traditionally, but my old world tradition obsession aside, the winemaker is certainly talented, so I would assume it's a solid Sauv blanc based on their red offerings.

                                Never had the MonteVina.
