Running tourism (Read 349 times)

I've always said running is the best way to see a new town.  This is only the most recent example of unexpected cool stuff I've encountered while running in unfamiliar locations.  Kinda wondered what all the helicopters were about on a nice Tuesday morning.

As someone who's been under them more than above (USN) that's pretty cool. They may be storing them to hold up the Bay Bridge.

Heh.  I crossed my fingers the one time I had to cross the Bay Bridge during that too-long trip.  What a POS.

        What does Tunis make?

If that was a USN boat, it was a somewhat rare one, being red and with its name in Chinese.

It's a 5k. It hurt like hell...then I tried to pick it up. The end.

Nah, that was back in the early 80's. Homeported at Alameda NAS which has been closed for some time. We used to rent sailboats from the base and have a real pisser sailing around on that bay. Good times.

i can honestly say there are some towns where you don't want to do that - for one, Baltimore.

Heh.  Now you tell me.  When I got near John Hopkins and the cops were locking themselves inside little bulletproof phone booths while on watch on the street, I knew something was up.  I ended up limiting myself to the Inner Harbor, between there and Ft McHenry, and some nice trail that ran west out of the Inner Harbor for miles.  The last option required a tempo run through 1-2 miles of really bad stuff though.

Nothing like a little life threatening action to quicken the pace. You should come run the South Monon with me sometime (below 38th St.). We can get a hell of a tempo effort there. 10th to Binford bridge - 4 miles of police tape.

Baltimore isn't so bad - I've run from the Stadiums and around to the harbor. Now South of McCormick Place in Chicago can be a great adventure.

hahaha - yeah the bulletproof phone booths were a little strange to me when i first got there, but i see the reason for them...

Last year i worked at the hospital in East Baltimore, but I lived near the undergrad campus - and it wasn't quite as bad, but there were definitely some sketchy areas. i got shot at with a BB gun once by some retarded kids... got hit by a car once, and quickly learned never to stop when people ask for "directions."  ahh, city life...

i'm so glad i'm moving to Scranton.

yes but the Inner Harbor is not really representative of Baltimore. Smile there's like a 5-mile radius around the inner harbor that is... well, much more interesting in terms of crime.

i mean, it ain't NYC or anything, but it has it's moments.

Running on the Verrazano Narrows bridge at the start of the NYC Marathon was a pleasant way to see the town. I could see the whole course laid out beneath me.

That, and (before the race) getting my picture taken by Europeans while using the "world's longest urinal" practically made the trip worth it.

                              it ain't NYC or anything,

Other than a few places like the South Bronx, NYC is not that dangerous anymore.

The area you ran is as good as it gets.  Go 1/4 mile west of the stadiums and try again!!

Yeah, the south Monon is an area I've never been to keen on trying...

You're going to love Scranton. It's no Roanoke or anything, but it's OK.

When you get settled in, go out and see my nephews' band, Cabinet.
