Colonial Half Marathon Race Report (Read 391 times)

gimme some sugar, baby

Hey, what's up everybody. I thought I'd post my half marathon results because I mentioned to Jeff that I was running the Colonial Half Marathon this weekend. The race went really well, to say the least. It began at 1pm, which is an awesome start time, but with not-so-awesome weather. It was about 38 degrees and there was freezing rain. Also, ten seconds before the start, I noticed I had forgotten to double tie my left shoe. I prayed that it wouldn't come undone, because my hands were too frozen to tie it, as I was wearing a singlet, shorts, shoes, and socks, and nothing else at the time. The race went off pretty normally. There were ~1000 people in the race or so, and I hung with my fellow Team Blitz runners close to the front of the race. The gun went off and I eased into the pace... I always like to start my races slow just to get into a rhythm before really go for it. The first nine miles or so were great. I think I averaged about 5:30 pace for the first nine miles, and many of those miles were hilly. Around mile 10 I started hurting a bit, but was able to close reasonably at the end and finished with close to a two minute PR in 1:11:56. I placed 11th, which wasn't as good as last year, but because the field was really stacked this year, I was pretty psyched. Basically, this was the best race of my life, at least as of today. The only thing that really sucked was the weather. When I finished, after the heat of running wore off, I started shaking because I was so cold. It took about an hour before my body temperature became normal... that freezing rain stuff is no fun. Anyways, all in all, a great day. And all of my fellow Team Blitz teammates ran really well. My friend finished 9th in 1:10 high, my friend Trevor was just ahead of me in 1:11:30 or so, and three of my other friends broke 1:20 for the first time, so it was a great day for everyone I knew. Good stuff.

Wow...my first 10k time was 1:11:11 (how's that for numerical alliteration?), granted, it was a godawful race (hot, hilly, poorly-marked course, got lost with a couple of other runners, etc.) and I was a bit under the weather, but to run a half marathon in that time...wow! Good job...no, GREAT job! Big grin k

Nice job on the race...by the way, I always shake when I average a 5:30 pace for the first nine miles Shocked Don't listen to him, he's just jealous... 2 minute PR's are pretty special. Nice!

Nice run, George. I knew you were ready to fly. Enjoy that PR! What's next?

I just checked my log. Apparently, 5:30 pace is something I can do .... for about 400 meters. Sheesh. That's fast. Nicely done, George. Although I agree with Lynn here - wtf is this thread doing here? Or did you just figure all us "elites" (cough) in the 2000 club would like to hear your race report, and all those slow schmoes on the main board (ahem) would feel oppressed or something? Good call. Although now I'm oppressed. Depressed. Repressed. Lots of pressing involved. On a related note, could you and Jeff get together and decide who's going to lead us? I just defaced this place yesterday thinking Jeff would be in front for a while, and you went and ruined it. Nice.

Thanks guys. Yeah, sorry, I didn't realize you all didn't want me to post race results here. I just saw races being discussed in the other threads so I thought it was OK. I won't post here next time. Jeff will probably take the lead from me pretty soon. I am running a marathon in two weeks and six days, and I'm going to be gradually lowering my mileage before then. Jeff seems to be building at this point.

Oh, sheesh. I was kidding. Everything here is kidding. Although to be honest, that race report my scare them non-elites. So maybe here is the best place. (See, that was kidding, too)

I can't believe there were 10 people in your area capable of beating your time. People consider Spokane to be a running mecca ( I live in Spokane). Currently we have one or two guys capable of that kind of time, it is truly impressive. To be 21 again..........................anyway McMillan's World Famous running calculator says you are ready to run a 2:31:47 Marathon. I am not sure what the conversion is to estimate a marathon time, but if the course is similar to your half and you have the endurance it should be another great time. You are the man! Sean

Thanks! Results are here, if you want to see the times for everyone in the race: http://www.doitsports.com/newresults3/client/160087_187909_2007.html There are usually quite a few really fast people who show up for the Colonial Half every year. It was really stacked this year, in particular. It's just a big race, I suppose. Anyways, hopefully that marathon calculator will be correct! It tends to overestimate your speed when you put in a shorter event and convert to longer, but hey, maybe this time it will work out. I ran 2:39:11 last year, so if I run anything under 2:37-2:35 I'll be pretty happy, and ecstatic if I run faster than that. Can't wait!

                          keep running.

Okay I gotta ask... running as fast as you do, do you actually pay attention to leg turnover? Have you ever purposefully done this? ((DUCKING)) but hey man, you started this thread! I can't believe how fast you are... insane! Watch out Ryan Hall!
running until I hit 1900 miles for the year. whether fast or slow I will just run.

I usually just go out and run hard... I do strides 1-2x a week for turnover, but I try not to focus on sprint training at all since I don't really race my best at anything shorter than a 5k/10k.
