Interval Junkie --Nobby
Hard to say. You?
Waffling between sticking with HMs for the Spring to try a sub-3 assault in the Fall. But keeping an eye out for a good one around the Boston Marathon time-period so I can keep training with the guys.
2013 Goals: 18:49 5K • 1:25 HM • sub-3 Marathon • run lots of races
Current Status 5/13: challenging my Achilles issue -- building some base
i run, but I am mostly looking for a place to goof off. Hitting 2000 miles is my goal for next year. This seemed like a good place for that.
Thus is born another swamper.
It's OK to keep half an eye on round-trip tickets to Tennessee; but under no circumstances should you ever get in a van with some surly oldhead named BCR.
I like running alone.
Can't you just keep training with your group even if you don't run a marathon?
Runners run.

Well who the HELL are you and what have you done with Candice?
I know, right?

Yep, that would be another option. But if their goal is marathon, and mine is 5K there might be some incompatibility in the specificity of the training.
Sure but if your ultimate goal this year is a sub-3 in the fall then do the specifics really matter? You're going to PR at ever distance from 5k to HM this spring, regardless of any specificity.
Not in Chicago
do you prefer aerobic or anaerobic waffling?
Depends how long it's supposed to last.
You suck. You should just quit. Jackass. Welcome back.
Hmm, this is a good point to consider. I'm not sure if optimizing for 5K in the Spring, then converting to Marathon mode in the Fall is more/less/equal optimal than training all year long for a Marathon (and still running shorter races) but only running one in the Fall.
It's probably a difference of running a 17:00 while training on your own and figuring out "5k specificity", or running a 17:10 and training with guys you like, get along with, know are sweet cats and can learn tons from. Easy math.
MTA: and that 10 sec difference is so ridiculous that on a good/bad day it could swing either way
But Och! I backward cast my e'e, On prospects drear! An' forward, tho' I canna see, I guess an' fear!
How many days a week are you running with the group versus on your own? I'd focus on the similarities between 5k training and marathon training, not the differences. They are about 95% the same.
In fact I think the training most of us do when we're marathon training is probably closer to ideal 5k training than to ideal marathon training--which explains why a lot of us PR at 5k when we're marathon training.
Back to the original topic--I'm considering starting a "RA Refugees" thread in the GSRWOLP. I think we need one.
Heh.
I'll probably pass on a Spring marathon. The stuff Mikey said pretty much takes the hand wringing out of the decision for me.

GVille is probably right. Good perspective.
I don't have a long history at this, but in this cycle I ran 6 days a week, 70miles. I run with the guys 2xweek: Wednesday intervals (which for Marathon training are usually pretty slow, depending on the mesocycle). Saturday, long run ~20mi or shorter tempo (~14-16). During 5K training I only ran with another group on Wednesday and intervals were usually 5K pace 400s,800s etc.
During Marathon training I don't think I was in a good position to race 5Ks. I was usually a bit beat on Saturday -- probably treading the line of Over Training.
Anyway, I should probably move this discussion to Running101 . . . where it will be drown out by Pushup contests and Butt-hurt greetings.
