What's that mean, it destroys talent?
It breaks you. It shakes you. It crushes you. It saps you. It leaves you trembling. Fries your brain. Withers your legs. Gives you that long-off stare. It chains you. Frames you. Claims you. It's a puzzle that you only get a chance to solve every 6 months. If you don't get injured. If conditions are right. If you don't go out too fast. If you don't go out too slow. If you recover from your training. If you train hard enough. If you happen to be "on" that day. If you are able to reach your true self in the last 10k. If.... So IF you want to know your true level of talent, then be a 5ker or a miler. You can master these events. But the marathon cannot be mastered. No one runs to his potential in the marathon. And even if you did, you wouldn't know THAT WAS THE RACE until after your last marathon had already broken you and then it would be too late. If you want to master the marathon, good luck. The marathon destroys talent. It doesn't create it.

    The Logic of Long Distance

Plus there's that goddam fire station and it's magical force field of broken dreams. Marathons are stupid.

A few faster marathoners I know all say the Half marathon is their favorite distance. Long enough that you can't fake it, but short enough that it does not leave you hobbling for days after.

          What does Tunis make?

Actually I wish I had another marathon; I've been enjoying them. (Maybe that means I'm not racing them as hard as you all do, or as hard as elite runners do.)

It's a 5k. It hurt like hell...then I tried to pick it up. The end.

Good point. But... ShanGen would be the first to tell you, I think, that she's come nowhere near maximizing her talent. And, if she decides that she wants to maximize her talent as a distance runner, at some point she will have to spend 3 or 4 years working on the 5k/10k. I think the simpler and less dramatic point that Magill is trying to make is that you don't see elite marathoners moving down to become elite 5kers. If Bekele had been a marathoner before a 5ker, he never would have run deep into the 12's. The 5k is the race that teaches you how to run fast. The marathon is the race where you take that lesson as far as it will go.

It's quotes like these, that only come up once every few weeks, that keep me in swamp every day. As a new runner, Jeff, you are my Yoda.

Veronica and I trying this new fad called uh, jogging. I believe it's jogging or yogging. it might be a soft j. I'm not sure but apparently you just run for an extended period of time. It's supposed to be wild.

Cool. Jon Warren was great. A really nice guy and an excellent coach. I did not leave because of the XC and track program: those were the reasons I wanted to stay. You daughter must be very smart. Wink
