He wasn't the reason they lost that game.

I completely agree.  If you have to lay that on a single person, it's probably AP.  Just a weird set of events though with all the fumbling, and so many in the red zone.

Again, I just found the last throw ironic.  A throw that really only Farve tries to make, rolling right, throwing left with the game on the line like he was in Pop Warner.  It's the kind of throw everyone feared when he signed, and it's the kind of throw that really keeps him out of the G.O.A.T. discussion.  All he had to do was take like 4 steps forward and fall down and they'd be lining up for a 48 yard field goal.

But wait.  These are the Vikings I've watched for the last 35+ years.  The field goal would have been blocked and run back for a TD anyway.

Coaching lost that game. Childress is a horrible coach. How and the hell to you send 12 guys out on the field after a timeout? They were in Longwells range. He is very consistant from 50 yards. All they had to do was give the ball to Taylor (less fumble prone) and have him get a couple yards, kick and field goal and game over.

How dumb is the NFL's overtime?

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy for New Orleans, especially after all they've been through in recent years, not to mention all those years of having to watch the "Ain'ts" attempt to play football. So good for them. NFL champs.

But Favre never got a chance to win it for his team! And I'm no Favre fan either, but come on!?! How many more years are we going to have to watch games decided by coin flips? The NFL overtime rule is so incredibly stupid! Why don't they learn from the college kid's game and adopt the NCAA overtime rules? At least both teams in the college game have a chance on offense.

Remember that it took the NFL eons before they decided the 2-point conversion was a good thing?

The "No Fun League" strikes again.

I'm running somewhere tomorrow. It's going to be beautiful. I can't wait.

I agree regarding the sudden-death overtime.  Doesn't seem quite as balanced a proposition as in hockey.

Who expected Favre to do anything different with that last throw?  He was cutting his teeth in Green Bay when I was in college and all the yoopers (residents of the Upper Penninsula of MI over-compensating for not wanting to be associated with lower MI) were ridiculously rabid Green Bay fans.  He's done stuff like that his entire career.  There are two things you can count on Favre for when the chips are on the line:  1)  He will do something bold, and 2) half the time it will be bold but not very smart.

Personally, after having to endure the idol worship early in his career in Green Bay and then watching what he's done the last couple years (he only came back this year to stick it to GB), I was very happy not to see him get another shot at the Super Bowl.  Though watching Manning clean his clock would have been ok.

I was very disappointed in the Saints, who I had not watched yet this season (didn't watch a game until the playoffs).  From their record I assumed they were a very good team.  They may be, but their inability to move the ball was not very convincing to me.  Without the fumbles and turnovers they would not have won, Minn handed it to them in that respect.

Yea, that's a tough one. Favre could have run them into field goal range but with the beating he took, maybe not .Bottom line is that they would not have gotten that close to the SB without him. He played his guts out. Fumbles and bad coaching hurt them bad.The refs made some bad calls as well.

As far as overtime, if the receiving team on the coin flip only wins 50% of the time, they won't change it.

I actually disagree about sudden death overtime.  You don't want your game to be determined by a coin flip, then win the motherfucking game in regulation.

Otherwise we are going to see a bunch of playing not to lose like you do in hockey in the last few minutes.

I like the NFL overtime format.  Sure it's not as balanced as say hockey but what can you do--the way the ball is put in play in football is with a kickoff.  The fact is the team that receives the opening kickoff only has a 60/40 statistical advantage--significant but not insurmountable.  Nobody "loses the game on a coin flip."

I absolutely hate the college overtime format--that's not football.

As much as it pains me to agree with a Pats fan, Mikey is spot on. I read (can't find the damn source for you anal fucks) that slightly more than 1/3 of OTs are won on the first possession and that 60% are won by the team winning the coin flip. This shit is more ESPN talking head hype than reality. Make a stop and get the ball.

College overtime sucks so bad its hardly watchable.

And hockey - yeah that penalty shot OT is such a great idea. Just about as shitty as penalty kicks in deciding the fucking World Cup final. Blech!

That post Trent quoted... how can he say Favre didn't get a chance to win the game? Did he not see the last drive?

The game hinged on two plays:

                    1. Favre/Peterson's fumble deep in Saints territory with a minute left in the first half.
                    2. Favre being Favre late in the 4th.

The Vikings threw two picks, and lost 3 fumbles or something like that. How do they deserve to win that game in any scenario?

Favre did not get a chance to win the game because the Saints' defense made two nearly-successful attempts at cracking his torso.

I agree about the college football format, but why not adopt something like a 10 or 15 minute overtime period. If it's tied after the first other team kicks off and you start anew. At least it remains a game with field position playing a role, but at least both teams get a shot at the ball.

Having said that (and being a lifelong fan of Vikings), I'm sure they would have found a way to lose in whatever format the OT is set up as.

Yeah, the NFL format is fine. My only point was that the Vikings would have most likely won if they'd won the coin flip considering how they were gashing the Saints. And then Favre would be the hero now instead of the goat that some are making him out to be. But this doesn't mean I think that the Vikings should have won or that the system is flawed.

Great game, though--even though it was sloppy. I couldn't believe how the Vikings kept coughing it up. You gotta give the Saints some credit for that.

                            trivia:

Favre's last pass as a Falcon = pick

Favre's last pass as a Packer = pick

Favre's last pass as a Jet = illegal forward pass, but the one before that was a pick

Favre's last pass as a Viking = pick

He should retire now with his record intact.  Or work a trade back to the Jets to erase that one blemish.

                            Prince of Fatness

Favre made a dumb decision in throwing that INT but what really killed the Vikings in that drive was that stupid 12 men in the huddle penalty that they took.  Favre said in an interview that if it wasn't for that penalty they would have run the ball, and then had about a 45 yard FG attempt.  Instead they called a pass play to try to get into more realistic FG position and the rest is history.

There is a long dark road ahead of me.
