Wow that was awesome. Goosebumps.
Runners run.
Great crowd in the Rupp Mile -- I think something races like that could actually get mainstream interest going in T&F.
The Logic of Long Distance
It's a tiny venue so even with people standing in doorways and filling in the warmup track, there were probably two or three thousand people in the building--all hard core track fans, athletes and coaches.
It's tough to imagine track ever going really mainstream outside the olympics. I'm a fairly serious track fan who lives 12 miles from that building and yet I couldn't see wasting half a Saturday, waiting through 15 heats of college kids running 200's and whatnot just to get to the 3 minutes and 50 seconds of the meet I wanted to see.
But give me a 4 minute Youtube video and I'm all over it!
He makes that look ridiculously easy, that was great stuff.

A Saucy Wench
I have no track experience or experience with pacers or watching stuff like this. It looked like he was on record pace until the last lap with the second pacer and they fell off pace? Also looked like Rupp was chomping at the bit to go. Did the second pacer hold him back too much?

I'm in the same boat. I'm unclear what I just saw and feel too lame to ask questions. Ennay is God(dess).
In other news, "goosebumps" just reminds me of that damn kids book series. No goosebumps. Nor chicken skin. (hawai'ian pidgin for goosebumps)
And once again Mr. Wizard (aka: Stevie Ray) explains the internet.
Just based on the reaction from Salazar it seems like the pacers did what they were supposed to and Rupp just didn't quite get it. I dunno. No matter how you slice it, a 10k runner breaking an indoor mile AR in January is freaking hard to pull off.
The 800-1200 segment is very tough in a record attempt, and he got there only a second or so off target? That's not bad pacemaking.
It's up to Rupp to push on through any time he wants.
The process is the goal.

Fast is better than long
Agreed.. Hard to fathom the range of this kid at the world class level.

Also true, that third quarter is very mental, and the fourth is guts.
I only saw the video on my phone, but what I noticed was a lack of visible change to turnover in the final quarter. That does indicate he was relaxed, but I couldn't tell if he turned himself inside out or not.

What in the Jehu?
Yeah, I thought the same thing a little Ennay, but just to echo those other guys thoughts -- finding a guy to pace 1200m of an AR attempt is hard enough. That guy almost needs to be in AR shape himself . And we are talking about the AR set by Bernard MF Lagat, who is one of the greatest milers of all time!! For a 10k guy to be so close, it's really just amazing.
And what's even more amazing to me is that he just came off an Olympic year where he made huge strides. Usually you'd expect a runner who has recently reached another level struggle in the next year.
Oh, and I just read that Mary Cain took the SAT in the morning before her HS AR mile. Workaday hobbyjoggers ought to appreciate that.
Yeah I wasnt thinking he didnt do a good job as much as maybe wasnt fast enough to pace that far. It is still awesome I agree.

And here I am considering a treck to the Upper West Side for the Millrose Games. Wait, those meets are not comparable. nm.
Well the father-daughter square dance was good too.
yeah, they scrapped the father-daughter square dance for us this year, we did father-daughter bowling instead.
The life of a high school runner. I think we've talked about it here quite recently but German Fernandez did an incredible 1600 3200 double in the same afternoon at the CA State meet, and then worked the evening shift at Applebees.
Personally, I drove through the night for five + hours with a runner who had to work Black Friday until the early hours after the store closed, in order to make the Nike NXN Cross Country meet.
