It only counts if it happens before he is too old to care ... Actually now is a great time - It still could be a hit against his ego, but he is a bit too old to do anything about it.
Maybe this was a way to psyche out future runners attempting to break the record. "If it is written, it must be true". That or he is just arrogant. Either way, you have to give him credit for such a ballsy quote, even if it is likely to be proven wrong...

The guy was a stud. I don't see him as bragging when he said that, just a statement of fact.
The Logic of Long Distance
It is more than this one statement - That I am pulling my opinion from.
To be fair - It grinds me when any sports superstar feels it necissary to tell you how awesome they are. If you are truly awesome - You should not have to raise your voice - Others voices will well up loud enough.
Also to be fair - H elikely had just finished the epic effort. He had chased the magic 300k mark for a few years and this was likely driving him relentlessly forward over those years.
I like to think of a world record or any great performance more as a beautiful work of art to be appreciated, but that should inspire others to greater things because of it ~ If someone is inspired and from that inspiration comes back and beats the record - That does not dimish the record, actually by inspiring the record beating performance it actually enhances the greatness of the previous record.
But - I guess that is in itself twisted

HobbyJogger & HobbyRacer
I think I read that Bob Beamon just cried. That's much classier than bragging, methinks.
It's a 5k. It hurt like hell...then I tried to pick it up. The end.
made some jovial comment to psych him out then floored it to put a good 15s gap on him over the last mile.
That one is easy, not many on this continent use the word 'Jovial' that rules out 90% and not many can put 15 sec gap on someone in the final mile. It's got to be our Dr R Bradford
Yup.
