Phil Coppess's twenty year old twin cities marathon record (Read 294 times)

Interesting article in the New York Times about the Twin Cities Court Record:

Coppess eventually designed a training regimen that dovetailed with his rotating shifts at Clinton Corn and his parenting responsibilities; he was awarded full custody of the children in a 1985 divorce. He ran 14 to 15 miles on work days, longer on his days off, carrying a palm-sized stopwatch to record each mile. “I didn’t think it was a good 20-miler unless I had gone under two hours,” he said. One day a week, he did a track workout, and on another, hills. Physical therapy consisted of weekly chiropractic adjustments.

    That's me in the back.

A very much unknown local hero. I live in Clinton, many people that know Phil have no idea of this record.

I wasn't into running when I lived in Clinton the first time (1985) but seeing Coppess running was a pretty common sight.

        Does he still run?

          No...I don't know why.

He's been introduced and called the start for the Dam to Dam...A 20k in Des Moines area where he still holds the record too. Sub 60 mins.

He also beat Frank Shorter in an early 1980's Chicago Marathon.

Just saw this on my Face Book Page: A quote from the Author of the article after a 4 hour interview with Phil

"I have tons of great stories and all the running-specific information, so i will try to find a venue for that part of the story (believe it or not, Runners World and Running Times both turned it down)."

I'm from Clinton too. I was friends with his daughter. I learned of his running in high school and was amazed of what he was able to do. He's very modest and you would never know of his ability. He started to get back into running in the late 90's but it didn't last long. I thought this was a great story! Amazing that the record still stands today. Goes to show the feat he was able to accomplish.
