Disappointing about the new Kinvara's, Jeff.  I bet you can return them, but that doesn't make you feel as good as if they'd lived up to their hype.

Don't make excuses for why you can't get it done.

    Imminent Catastrophe

      Well, that sucked.

Today's 50k was a disaster. Short story: DNF at halfway.

This was the worst course ever. No trail at all, some newly-graded and nasty torn-up doubletrack with torn roots and big rocks amid soft soil. Much of it was just bushwhacking through woods ducking branches, or across knee-deep cow pasture grass, and some running down creek beds with no trail. It sucked!

So, with no trail to follow, the pack I was running with missed a turn and inadvertantly cut 1-1/2 miles off the course right from the start so I was DQ'ed before mile 5! Kept going anyway for the next 10-mile loop and lost the trail again and more than made up the miles I'd missed earlier. You know it's a bad day when you meet runners coming the other direction. Then I saw landmarks that I had passed a few miles before. By the time I was approaching the halfway point (where my car conveniently was waiting for me) I couldn't think of a reason to keep going. So it turned into a hard 16.7-mile trail run. That's OK.

Sometimes you're the windshield, sometimes you're the bug!Big grin

Bummer about the Kinvaras... after trying Kinvaras, NB880, and Aasics, I had a great experience at the local shop. I bought a pair of the Saucony Contaras as an alternate to my Mizuno Riders. They are cushiony but seem lightweight - I decided the Nike Pegasus are too heavy to get again... I'll test them out this week. Easy 5 this morning after seeing a great (young) blues band. You know you're out late when you could be the mom of lead guitar...

I ran 6 miles this morning, followed by washing the car and cleaning house a bit. Now for a yoga workout to try and work out some of the kinks I've been bothered by lately. Trail run of undetermined length tomorrow.

Yikes! Sorry about the 50K... Double yikes, there seems to be a foot of snow on the ground - I guess it's a treadmill workout today

12 mile trail run today in IRC with new buddy (that I ran the last one with). Downside was one of her two dogs went missing for several hours. Spent an extra hour after the run backtracking on the trail without finding her. The dog finally came out at the trailhead a couple hours later and is safely home now. Whew! Other good news, that 6th mile that was so challenging last time was easier today - yay for that! This new friend is very nice. She's a marathoner (two in the last month) and a triathlete (has an Ironman next weekend) ---  an experienced competitor who doesn't talk much about it, very humble - just says she "likes to run in the woods with her dogs" -- my kind of gal.

Happy - What a great running companion you have found.  Do we have a new ultra runner coming up soon?

Russ - Sorry the 50K didn't work out for you.  At least you get a good story out of it.

It's going to be a tough week for us here.  We have been stuggling with my father-in-law recently with his transition to nursing home care do to advanced Parkinson's disease.  He passed away last night.  It's a blessing in some ways because his quality of life had waned in the recent months, but it is making it very difficult on my wife at a time when she should be focusing on herself.  We should hear from her doctor by tomorrow to see if her recent chemo is effective.  We really could use some good news right now.

                          How's it going out there?

I'm having a breakfast tea and preparing for a 12 miler. Unfortunately, the Saucony Contaras have to go back after brunch (sore knees, calves and feet after the test run).

Its a beautiful morning here, I hope all is well out in your world.

It's a gorgeous morning here, although cool at 33F. I'm having coffee and banana and getting ready to run my 10-mile rolling hills route on the paved bike trail.  I haven't run it since I hurt my arch on it a couple of months ago...time to get back on the horse! That route prepared me well for last year's Rhody Run, which comes around again on May 20; so I want to get comfortable with it again.

Thanks Happy, DW's scan results came back and everything shows an improvement.  Not sure what to take from that just yet.  It sounds like her doctor is not quite happy yet.  They sent the results off to the specialist and we will hear back next week whether it's good enough to go to the next phase (bone marrow transplant) or if we have more chemo to go.

The big rush for my FIL is over.  The funeral was last night.  Now comes all the fun paperwork.

I did get in a much needed long run today and I feel much better.  I've been eating way too much this week with all of the food people have been bringing by.  It is going to be a very warm weekend here.  Good luck to all the folks running Boston in this heat wave.

Checking in after my run - glad to see your update, Jeff, and relieved that your wife's scan shows improvement. Having to wait longer for a more definitive result has got to be wearing on all of you. Good for you to make time to get your run in with all that's going on...so therapeutic.

My run went great today, which was a relief since Wed and Thurs did not. I've heard that it takes 48 to 72 hours to recover from a hard workout. So I guess I've determined it takes me the full 3 days. I didn't have any leg pain after Tuesday nights faster run. My legs just felt tight and slow.  I'm undecided whether to repeat the same workout next week or try something different.
