SNOW! And lots of it. Unheard of! My shoes would disappear in the stuff. And it made running hard! Why didn't anyone tell me running in lots of snow is hard? And running on snow compressed by cars is dangerously slippery. And to think that I was looking at yaktraks (sp?) only a few weeks to go and deciding against it cause we don't get much snow. I could've used them today. And the next few days. More snow is expected. And temps won't go up till Wednesday.

But it was a great experience. Loved it. Had to go slow and I had to be really careful with my footing when I ran on the road, but other than that, it was great furn.

Yeah, I'll take credit for starting the string of injuries this time.  Went to see another doctor yesterday.  It went exactly like all the sports hernia websites said it would.  "Turn your head and cough".  These doctors just don't know what sports hernia is and don't care to learn.  I tried for 15 minutes to tell this doctor that it wasn't a "hernia" it was a "sports hernia" and he should learn the difference, and he spent 15 minutes telling me how many hernias he had fixed and that I didn't have one.  It is very frustrating.

I don't have the slightest idea what my next step should be.  The incompetent doctors can only fix what they can see from the outside.  It hurts too much to run and running is who I am.

That really sucks. Is there a sports medicine group, or a doctor that runs, anywhere near you? Hope you can find someone to treat this thing.

Can't you find yourself a sportsdoc? We have those here, they're general practitioners that specialise in sports related injuries.

Alright, I ordered the yaktrax (sp?). Snow will have melted by the time it gets here, but at least its here when I could use them the next time.

What an incredibly frustrating situation for you!

Obviously you need a to find a surgeon who has actually done this procedure.

Print this out (or something similar) and take it in to them:

It's actually a pretty interesting read. You may know it all already - but maybe not - and maybe some of the conservative measures mentioned will help you out.

6 miles tonight and the foot feels fine. YAY!

              Imminent Catastrophe

Glad to hear about the foot, Trey.

I had an awful 6 miles today, I really wanted to quit. Stiff, sore, tired, slow. Ugh. If I weren't so close to 1500 I'd take a few weeks off. I'm still hoping that cutting back will help.

I had planned a plyo w/o but my legs didn't feel like high impact, so instead did a 55 minute kickbox w/o. Focused more on form then intensity. No fast kicking to save the knees, just chambering or slow and controlled kicking. Nice way to start the morning: all agressive and hungry Or maybe I was aggressive cause I was hungry?

                  ...---...

So I just got yelled at by my doctor for running yesterday before my blood test results were in. The good news: It's not Gout, blood work shows normal everything. The bad, it's a stress fracture. Not a bad one (just got another set of x-rays done that show a little area). Pool running for a couple weeks. I'm still doing Disney.

                    Hang in there Russ!

So since I've been doing great at keeping up with the bunny, I thought I'd throw something else into the pot and 2 weeks ago I signed up for a 10K  which is tomorrow. Then I decided I better "cram" for it by doing some speedwork -  which I've never done much of. My plan has always been that once I built up a decent mileage base, then I'd work on speed. Well that day never really came about.  Anyway, it's been an effort in self-sabotage.  After two weeks of incorporating speedwork and not stretching enough I guess, my left ham and low back  are tight and painful as can be, and my right pyriformis is twinging away. Just spent 20 minutes of my lunch hour sitting on an ice pack. I'll be massaging and icing tonight and  scheduled myself for a sports massage in the morning.  Otherwise, I'm just crossing my fingers for being able to complete the 10K. Wish me luck.

MTA  Trey, I'm so relieved you don't have gout. My dad has that - and you really don't want it.

6.5 doggie kilometers in the snow. Much better doable than Thursday. And Spike was again an energiser bunny on crack. Unbelievable how that doggie was running. Or was he cold and in a hurry to get home?

Spooky smelled something in the snow cause every couple of steps she did this jerky nosedive to the ground making me do this jump forward and downwards. An injury waiting to happen so I finally held on to the leash to have my arm deal with most of the jerky movement.

Incredibly fantastic run at the coldest temp I've ever run in: -9C. Not much wind, so guess that's why it felt OK. Probably the coldest I've ever experienced in this country.

My flight got canceled so I had an unplanned day in NYC and had a nice "long" run in Central Park. Nice, because there should be a foot of snow on the ground tomorrow and I'm not as tough as Dutchie and Spike about running in the snow. Still, it was cold (27°F) with a stiff, icy north wind. All the usual aches and pains were there but I felt better than I have for awhile and banged out 10.7 miles, half of that on the bridle trails. There's something about running in nasty weather that really makes it fun. NYRRC had a 15k on the loop road and there was a solid sheet of ice just past the aid stations where runners had dumped their water cups. Yikes! As soon as I stopped running (you can't run on 5th Avenue, WAY too crowded) I got really cold. Brrrrr.

HappyFeat--be careful about that speedwork, it'll hurt you. Been there, done that.

Trey, sorry about the SF, but I'm glad it's not bad enough to knock you out of Disney.

Heffa, you must be able to find a good sports doc, check with local schools/colleges to see who they use.

                              Let it snow!

PerfessorR, is 1500 your goal for the year? You are sooo very close!

Just home from the 10K - very happy with my time of 58 minutes; although the race director said he couldn't vouch for the exactness of the distance. "It could be a little more or little less." I think it's gotta be pretty close though, the way it felt to me. (My goal was to not be slower than 10 mpm.) The sports massage was a great prep. I'd never been to this masseuse, and she really knew what she was doing. So between what I was able to do last night and what she did today, I did not have anything cramp up during the race. Whew!

I read a 10K "race tip" last night that said "go out fast for the first 1.5 mile", then slow down to your goal race pace until the last 2 miles; then sprint.  So naturally (because I'm sooooo stooopid) I tried that.  Ha Ha. I spent the first half of the race trying to get control of my breathing again! Then I just ran as fast as I could while still keeping my breathing under control. The next local event is not until May, so I have lots of time to try to improve my speed more sanely. I'll take your advice to heart, Russ.
