Anyone been out there?

Roads are gettin' dry around here - most of the ice is gone on paved roads. I went out on my 29er, this time with 35mm 'cross tires rather than the 55mm high-volume atb tires. It was a hoot! The bike rolled faster on pavement, and did fine on packed (frozen) sand and mud. On ice, well, no tire that isn't studded can hold up, so I managed two wheels-up experiences. Once was trying to negotiate a turn-around on a dead end road on glare ice; at walking speed, suddenly the trees got a bit taller.

The second downer was at full speed on a dirt road with daylight fading fast. I got stuck in a rut on a solid ice section, and it pulled me over to the side and into the snowbank, nice and hard. After a few freeze/thaw/refreeze cycles, the snowbank was about as cushy as a gravel pile; I ended up sort of on top of it, while the Big Wheel hit hard enough to twist the handlebars on the stem.

I've got a couple of $17 LED flashlights now for evening/night rides, at least on the road. Still have to figure out how to handlebar-mount them, though. They're Ray-O-Vac brand, 2 AA size, advertised as 45 lumens. It looks like it's an older Luxeon emitter, which might be able to be replaced (with chiselling, prying, and soldering) with a newer Luxeon K2 or Rebel. That might actually double the light output without drawing more current from the batteries. I think I'll pick up another one for experimenting...

Yah, I got out today; just a 1.5 hour ride, easy.

I had to ratchet down my aspirations a bit -- moved my half ironman tri debut from June to September.

So, guys, I'm not looking like much of a cyclist yet.

WAIT! I oiled my chain today (first time Yes ). And took off the plastic reflector dealies that were on my spokes. I'm sure it was my imagination, but my bike seemed smooth & ready to go today.

Did I mention I hi-fived a bicyclist during my race last week? I was running on the side of the road against traffic and he was coming up with traffic, so I just stuck out my hand a bit. Big grin

Oiled? OILED? No, no, you must use $57 per application bio-degradable PTFE microplating super-lube, or I will laugh at you and your hairy legs.

Actually, my current chain lube of choice is Dumonde Tech Lite. Good stuff, at about $10 an ounce - pricey, but that should last a couple of seasons at least. Clean and dry the chain, then one small drop per link, spin the drivetrain, shift through the gears, then wipe off the excess. Reapply when you can hear the chain again.

Oh, and be sure to remove your dork disk. That's one of the sooper sekrit handshakes for getting in to the "real syklist klub," along with beer and superfluous leg shaving.

///running to garage to see what I bought///

"Tri-flow Superior Lubricant"...Penetrates & protects (suppressng snicker) formulated with P.T.F.E. Cool

Is a dork disk one of those big plastic plates that goes against the gears? No dork disk on my bike! Yes

No hairy legs, either!

OK, I'd better stop there Embarrassed

Yeah, good stuff, and that's exactly what a dork disk is. It's still too cold here to go hairless, though. Feh.

Basically it's a 700c mountain bike - mtb drivetrain, frame, bars, and controls, but the wheels are road bike diameter. 700c wheel (622mm bead seat diameter) + 2.3" or so wide tires = roughly 29" wheel diameter, as opposed to the normal 26" mtb overal wheel diameter. Makes a normal mtb look like a kid's bike:

It's a bit slower to accelerate, but they hold speed better and roll over larger obstacles. And they look cool.

Boy, do they! A friend of mine has one (yes, my face has a green envious tint) and he blasts the downhills. Shocked
I usually catch him on the climbs. Big grin

Rode outside on my road bike today - earliest I've ever gone out on Ruby the Wonder Bike. I'm usually fatter this time of year, but a little effort and a well-timed episode of the flu have me with 10+ lbs. less insulation than usual, so no need to ride the Bike of Shame. It's just as well, as that bike is currently in a state of almost total disassembly - with some new handlebars, bar-end shifters, and brake levers, it'll be resurrected as a cyclocross bike.

But, oh, Ruby. Carbon and Dura-Ace. It's like cheating on my wife.

Naa, that's not cheating. Wink If your wife is anything like mine, she will happily put up with that kind of mistress. Big grin It is the two legged ones they get real grumpy about. Thanks for the info on the 29er. 54 degrees today Smile, it is so nice to be able to ride without tights and all the other winter clothing. Hell, that is 10 pounds right there..

I do not know about all of you, but I am ready for spring
