I'm taper tweaking!!!!!
4.5 days to go. Hi guys.
But hey, I signed up for a "Cycling for Boneheaded Idiots"* class at REI. I'm going to learn how to fix a flat.
*no wait, it was the "Cycling for Pointy Headed Intellectuals" class I signed up for.
OK back into lurk mode.
Oh wait! I looked at trainers at the bike shop. They are soooo expensive! grumble grumble
I know what you mean
I picked up a set of rollers from Performance Bike for under a $100. I like the rollers better than the trainer because you are still having to balance the bike and because you are riding on a very narrow path, <18 inches
, it has made me a smoother steadier rider in a group.
Good luck in your next event.

I'm making progress, guys.
The marathon went fine -- 9 minute PR.
I went on my first group ride on Monday; very weird cycling with a group. It was fun, but I need to build up "slowing and stopping at intersections" skills. The newbies all clipped out; the vets balanced.
Biked to work today, too.
And Saturday, I am going to race some students of mine on a dare (and to raise $ for a charity).
Plotting revenge marathon. Maybe Napa.

You do what works for you. They were newbies once.

They are widening a three mile stretch that kept me from cycling to work. Hope they finish this summer.

Econo, Congrats on the PR. How did the charity ride go?
Croydon, good to see you back. How did the surgery go and when do you get back into saddle?
Rode the TOSRV the weekend before last.
Great day on Saturday, but I do not think I have ever been as wet as we were on Sunday
I have to find a good wind/rain vest. I had to put a garbage bag on my front to keep from getting chilled. My stoker said he was not having any problem at all, gee I wonder why
Did, what have you been doing lately?
I see we have a new member, Welcome aboard to "pfriese" and a "sooner" to boot. Or is it a "cowboy" or neither.

Went very smooth. No problems at all. Spent the first couple of weeks around the house. Cleaned my bikes to a polished shine. My mountain bike hasn't been that clean since I bought it.
Spent the last three weeks doing a few miles on the fluid trainer. This Sun was my first time on the road. I meet the group and rode 30 miles with them which was great. I was itching to get on the road. Plan to ride the trails this weekend. Probably stay off the technical bits for a while. In the next couple of weeks get back into running. Slowly build the miles back up from here.
Glad you had a good time on the TORSV. After my wet, freezing cold decent from Mt Mitchel a couple of months ago I ordered a good rain jacket the next day. No more trash bags for me.

. I'll make nowhere near 5000 miles for the year, but after the marathon this weekend, I plan on cranking up the bicycle miles. I'd like to finish the year with ~equal bicycle & running miles (~2000). I have only one Century ride planned for the summer (Hotter Than Hell Hundred in Wichita Falls, Texas), but plan on a few local metric century rides.
Thanks for the welcome again.

Hi Paul! Good to see you here. I like that goal -- as many bike miles as running miles for the year, hmmmmmm could be good motivation for me.
My charity ride against my students went well, but it was the day after their "prom" (these are grad students) so attendance was poor and I beat both of them!
hey, I know how to schedule a race strategically.
Better yet, though, I went on my 2nd group cycling ride; this one longer. Felt tired & wind-buffetted on the way out, but at the turnaround one of the vet cyclists said "feel free to take the hill a little faster on the way back" and being the competitive jerk that I am,
I had to show them what I could do on the hill...then I flew down the other side of it, too. That was fun!

Flying down the hills is always fun.
My stoker and I DO NOT coast down any downgrade whatsoever. We push as hard as we can, because there is always an upgrade
Someone asked once why we push so hard downhill, huh?? Do the math I said: 40 lbs + of bicycle, two 190 lbs + of riders. That is 425 lbs or so of man and machine. That is a lot to push uphill. Still fun though.
Paul,
A Cowboy. Well just so you know, I am a Cyclone.
Croydon, glad your getting back in the saddle.

My first 30-mile bike ride today, pokey slow.
OK, guys, the chain fell off of my bike toward the inside, when I was shifting from the little ring to the big ring. And the same thing happened TWICE in a triathlon last weekend. What do I need to do to prevent this from happening again?

First congrats on the 30 mile ride. It's the accomplishment that counts.
I have to ask this, are you sure you were shifting from the small ring to the big ring.
Shifting to a
smaller
cog in the front has more of a snapping action because you relieving spring tension so it has more tendency to jump off (to the inside). Going from small to big your pulling the derailleur, via the cable, to the outside ring and the chain should follow.
Put the bike on a stand, or get someone to hold the rear wheel up, and shift it a few times to see if the derailleur is making some weird move toward the inside before it moves out.
I've never heard of one jumping off while moving to a bigger cog.
If you have a bike mechanic look at it let me know what they say. This is interesting...and annoying.

Yes...it happened all 3 times the same. I crested a hill and was starting to shift from the baby ring to the middle ring. Mechanically it doesn't make sense because I'm moving the derailleur to the right...and the chain goes berserk and ends up lodged to the left.
I will take it to the bike shop...time for a tune-up anyway (yes, both my DH and I are helpless babies when it comes to mechanical things). And I'll report back.

Got it tweaked at the bike shop...now they tell me that the thingie that shifts the gears in the back (uh, cog?) is slightly bent from one of my fall-overs. That's why it's noisy in certain gears. ehhhhh.
But the good news is; this little biking that I'm doing is paying off! I did well in an olympic duathlon on 6/15 (bike was 40K, and I averaged just over 18 mph) and my best "event" in a triathlon this last weekend was the 13.4 mile bike portion, at slightly less than 18 mph on a rolly course in the rain. I know this doesn't sound fast to you guys, but it earned me an age group 2nd place in both events. I'm thrilled to see results on the bike so soon!
Now, if I could only tap into some swim speed....
Plotting revenge marathon. Maybe Napa.

WOW looks like you did great!!
If you find the magic swim speed incantation let me know. That's my downfall.
Really glad the bike running smooth again. Well, get the rear shifter thingy (Derailer)
straightened out and your good to go.
Here is a site that has more about bikes than you'll ever read.

Hey there. I didn't realize there was a forum! Just finished the Ironman World Championship in Kona. Man, that was hard. This is a great website. I really enjoy charting my progress and keeping tabs on my friends. Keep up the good work!
