Suppose to be in the 40's by mid week.
Thanks

Hmmm...its been awhile since I did that ride but I think I had on..
polypro long underwear, top and bottom
long sleeve cycling jersey
long sleeve wool turle neck
Columbia ski jacket
shorts
Icebike tights
smart wool socks
toasty toes warmers
neoprene booties
insulated lobster gloves
headgator
for water, I used a camel back placed under my ski jacket. Works great as long as you remember to blow the water that is in the tube back into the bladder. Something that helps with freezing valves on water bottles it to turn the bottle upside down in the cage. That way, the bottle will start to freeze were the air gap is, at the bottom of the bottle

Welcome aboard!
... If you do not mind traveling, you should come up to Ohio and do the TOSRV. It is on May 10-11 this year...
BTW, what is the name of your town? I may have flown into your airport.
Roger
Hi Roger. Sorry I didn't answer your post. I must have been in a hurry and just read right over it
I'd love to ride the TOSRV. 200 miles in 2 days would be quite a challenge. I'll have to wait closer to the date to be sure. I did our local Polar Bear ride Sun the 13th which was 50 miles. I turned it into 65 riding to the departure point and back home. We had 125 riders participate. It was great riding in a sea of bikes. It gave me a small taste of what the peloton must be like. That was my first organized ride. I plan to do a 70 mile ride Feb 9. Apart from that it's just been 10-15 of us on group rides with the local cycle club and quite a few rides on my own.
If you've flown on US Airways much you've probably been through the Charlotte airport in NC. I'm in Gastonia about 20 miles west of Charlotte. We have some great back roads to ride in South Carolina. There isn't much traffic but you have to contend with the occasional patched road which is great bunny hop practice.
The weather here has been crap the last few days. Either very cold or raining with rain again today. I guess cold is a relative term. It hasn't been in the single digits like you guys, but its in the teens at night and 30's during the day so I've been keeping the fluid drive on my trainer hot.
Enough muttering, lets go warm up the rollers for a change

Thats some good info. I have a small camel back that would fit nicely under a jersey. Hmmm, freezing water bottles, never thought I would consider that.
Question, is "fxdgear" cryptic for fixed gear? If so, I just bought a Gary Fisher hardtail mountain bike and want to convert it to a single speed and was looking for tips. Anyone else can chime in on the subject. Thanks

Yep, fixed gear. Really cant give you any tips on conversion because I bought a Bianchi Pista . You might go to Sheldon Browns web site, he is supposed to be the guru of fixed conversions

Yes, as a matter of fact I'm reading his section on "Singlespeed Conversions" now.
Your right, it is an excellent source of bike maintenance information.

Hope you like riding fixed, it is a blast.I will usually ride fxd during the week and then do my long week end ride on the road bike. Although I have done a 137 mile ride on the fxd. I am still considering taking it to the National 24 Hour Challenge for the flat 6 mile night loop. The gearing is perfect 42x16 for that loop. I might try a couple of laps and if it doest work out, oh well, can always change back to the road bike

Wow, I really need some cold weather pointers from you guys.
This is my first winter riding. All I have are slip on warmers.
The high here in central NC was 35, not normal, so I stayed indoors on the rollers.
Compared to 9 deg, I'm a wimp.
I figured out what to wear on runs but rather than reinvent the wheel I'm open for suggestions.
I would rather not go out looking like the Michelin Man unless that's what it takes.
Today, I had on cycling bibs, a running singlet, a long sleeve Under Armour mock tee, a long sleeve cycling jersey and a Road Runner's Sports jacket that is wind proof, wool socks, running tights and neoprene toe booties. A fleece-lined skullcap, my regular cycling helmet with helmet cover, regular cycling gloves with wool mittens. I have found that the helmet cover does a great job of holding heat in with out my head getting too hot.
I don't like ski masks, probably because of my beard
Croydon, I have been into Gastonia before. My wife and I have an air charter service. I fly for a living.

Had my first ride in sub freezing temps Fri. The first 3-4 miles were miserable with my hands and feet numb. After hitting a couple of hills hard I warmed up and could feel my hands but my feet never did warm up. I'm still experimenting with the "wardrobe".

What a coincidence!! My wife and I also fly. I flew corporate for 5 years with a company in Columbus, GA. We had a Falcon 10. Economy went sour and they sold the plane.
I keep all my certificates current. She instructs with the local club. Matter of fact we need to renew our CFI this summer.

Today I have the flu, as I did yesterday, the day before that, the day before that, etc. NO BIKE FOR YOU!
I got to fly on a corporate jet once. Only way to travel, man. And I could tell that, once they had the squishy passengers off of the thing, the pilots pushed the controls a touch harder. When they took off after dropping us off, they climbed with a purpose...

Oh Yea, we had a little fun with it on maintenance or repositioning flights.
They
really
go when they're practically empty.

Actually, now that I remember, our first stop that day was at a dinky little visual approach field. There was a lot of smoke in the air from wildfires in Mexico or something like that, so we circled around a few times while the pilots craned their necks looking for the place. Just before they gave up and headed for a bigger field, I heard one of them say "Hey, there it is!" and then we banked and dropped faster than I've ever experienced outside of a roller coaster.
Neat!

YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!!!!! Talk about a small world. What are the chances? They have to be minuscule. Are either you or your wife looking for a flying job?
I am taking a check ride Wed to put a B100 King Air on our certificate. I have a young pilot taking a check ride Thurs on our CE-210. We will be putting an Air Ambulance equipped CE-340 on the certificate within a month. If all goes well, there is a Cargo King Air 90 that I may try and get reinstated on the certificate. I will have a need for 1-2 pilots in the next 2-4 months.
