<whine>with 11 miles on the road and 20 on a trainer I have today and tomorrow to make my 100 miles for the week. Big problem is I have to work a 12 hour shift...today... and tomorrow!! The thought of sitting on a trainer for two hours the next two evenings is not appealing so I may just admit defeat. I'll look through some movies. See if I can find one that will get me through. Any suggestions?</whine>

Run Lola Run
is a great movie! might be hard to find at a movie rental place, though.
Jeez, I love stupid comedies but none come to mind right now. Oh wait, there's....
Kung Pao: Enter the Fist
; it's just really good, low-class comedy. That and
Dodgeball
.

You are maybe are a little bit whining
, I guess it is a matter of perspective. I would not worry too much, the pace bunny has really been whining about your pace
. A couple of days off will not kill you. What kind of movies do you like? With DirecTv and the Starz channels, we get a reasonable selection without having to go out to rent one. They sure do repeat a lot though.
The wind has been howling here for two days (25 to 30 knots gusting to over 40
), it looks like is going to continue for at least one more day and the temperature 8F and going lower.
I am sure dididit has it even worse since he lives near Muskegon, MI. The weather has got to get better, I hope

Yea, I guess your right. In the grand scheme I have built a little buffer. And sometimes I don't put enough emphasis on rest.

Funny, we're getting the wind at 16, gusts to 30 but without the 8F.
It got up to 65F which felt good.

Jeez, you guys have the weather! License to whine. Croydon, did you end up watching any good movies? Or just rest?

I managed to get some miles on the fluid trainer watching Lord of the Rings. I knew
that
movie would probably outlast me... it did.
I've tried watching sitcoms, but after about three or four episodes, it's too easy to stop when an episode finishes.
Suppose to rain the next couple of days. Looks like I'll be riding in the garage.

Looks like I'm stuck in the garage for the foreseeable future - we've had so much snow recently that the roads are seriously narrowed, and off-road is just impossible. We had like 8" of heavy wet stuff, and then a few days of zeroish temps, so it's pretty much like concrete under the 8"+ of fluff that's fallen since then. Bleah. I hope my woodstove can heat up my shop to maybe 50.
Any of you folks ride rollers?

Sure, I ride mine quite often. Rode them today as a matter of fact. Rain outside. Got a question??

PROS:
I prefer riding it to the fluid trainer. I like the freedom of movement it allows. As long as you don't
move
completely off!! It feels more like being on the road than a fluid or magnetic trainer.
Mine folds in half so its just a matter of unfolding it, set the bike on and ride. So setting it up is quick and easy.
I use a chair to stabilize myself while I'm getting a little speed, then transition my hand to the bike.
It doesn't clamp the bike so you don't need any extra parts like a training skewer and the bike doesn't get scratched.
It will make a smoother rider out of you. Or you'll be lying on the floor.
CONS:
I can't ride it much more than one and a half hours. I can't stand up on it, so my bottom gets tired of being in the saddle. Same goes for your feet. You have to keep moving (peddling) and the constant pressure on the balls of my feet (I'm clipped to the peddles) make my toes go numb. That's probably just me. The same thing happens to me on an elliptical machine after about an hour. If I ride for an hour I can get off for 10-15 mins then do another hour. But I can do a five hour ride on the road, go figure.
I can't let go of the bars, and riding with one hand is tricky, so my palms get tired. I do put a bottle on the bike and drink from it, but I'd get a few miles on it before you try.
It's a delicate piece of machinery. If you dent one of the rollers, it will be out of balance and that roller will have to be replaced.
If I had to keep either the rollers or the fluid trainer it would be the rollers. It just feels more like the road.
The $10,000 question..what's the learning curve like?? At first it takes quite a bit of concentration to stay smooth so the first few sessions aren't long. Set up beside something substantial so you can grab it it you need to stop. Before you get started set the bike in a gear that will give you 14-16 mph at a cadence of about 80. For me that's the big ring in the front and the third cog on the back. You don't want to change gears until your up to speed on it. DON"T look at the front wheel. Focus about 10-15 feet in front of you. Otherwise you'll overcompensate trying to keep the wheel centered on the roller and wipe out. Once you get the hang of it this isn't so much a problem. Expect to wobble a little at first. Just keep peddling, try to relax and smooth it out. By the third session you should feel comfortable and relaxed. After a while try taking a bottle out of the cage and putting it back. Search on YouTube you'll see some good ones.
This is what I have and I'm very satisfied with it.

Two things I like about this one are the bumpers on the front that keep the wheel from going off the roller. That's saved me a few times when I get too close to the edge. And the little step on the side. The seat is high enough with the bike on the ground. The roller puts it another two to three inches higher. With the step you have something to rest on while you get started.
Well there you have it. Roller riding 101.

I am really tired of this weather
And on the couple of days that I might have gotten in a ride this last week, I was stuck in the hangar working on an airplane.
Did, yes I have a set of rollers. I figure any time spent balancing on the rollers is every bit as good as being on the road. IT IS JUST SOOO BORING
The worst part is getting my lazy butt down to the basement and on the bike. I can do about 30 min at a time.
Croydon hit all the high points on riding on rollers. I ride mine in the basement in a doorway. When I first started, I had the rollers close enough to one side so that I could use my shoulder to lean on the door jam. It took a couple of miles the very first time before I could completely balance without using the third point. I can set up without my hands because I can hold both sides of the door and still keep the bike on the rollers. I put my water bottles on the ledge above the door which is a much safer place to reach for them than from the cages on the bike.
An interesting note, I learned how to ride without hands after my first winter using rollers, something I had never learned as a kid. Too many crashes.

The doorway sounds like a good solution, wfr.
Here I am with my pathetic bike report for the week -- only one short ride, 50 minutes, alongside my son who was rollerblading. So I did some one-legged drills. Cripes, even a slow ride like this helps -- I can hardly get my feet clipped in.
I promise to bike more when the marathon's over.

Hey, you are doing just fine. Don't let us pedal pounder's scare you away.
BTW, welcome aboard to T-Bone. I see you are out there setting the early pace. Keep up the good work!
