started the year as in many years past wtih run around the Imperial Palace 5K circuit but a lot slower than before to say nothing of ever thinking of doing it barefoot or in
Japanese wooden geta
in those days so probably had more fun this time. Got a lot of smiles anyway even from the Palace Guards busy preparing the grounds for the Emporer's annual New Year's greeting to the people. would have been better with a dea though.

----------
ps to tim - after 28 days in November, made it to 32 before today's diversion but I'm ready to go all the way to 3/1 for you now buddy. In the meantime, the January issue of toe-rai-ah-so-roan (triathlon) Magazine has a yearly log book for daily swimming, cycling and running. It's too much to waste on a guy who only swims once a year and sometimes goes weeks without doing anything so it's yours when you're ready (I got the simplified running one from Runners Magazine to use, starting 3/1, that is).
the seven marathons and five ultras I had planned for 2008 probably would have gotten me pretty close to 800 miles but two of the marthons (UWR/SM) fizzled and three of the ultras fizzled into DNF's at 29/42/31.7 miles, respectively for the planned 50/62.2/50 miles, 69.5 miles short of goals.
actually, I like running events without as much training as possible
just to see if I can do 'em without that much training
I'll be back next year.

Welcome!
Yeah, I don't think I'm going to manage 1000 miles this year either, certainly not without a major injury (knock on wood). But 800M is definitely realistic and if I manage to run it, it'll be more than in my 3 previous years combined.

Hi, I wanted to join too. I'm still trying for 1000 miles at this point but looking to get knocked up toward the end of the summer/ fall so if that happends 800 miles will be much more feasable. Until then though, I'm going to try to work hard and get more miles in. If I hadn't been sick so much early this year, I was hoping to be a lot farther in my miles by now, but I'll just do what I can now.

Tetsujin! You never cease to amaze me... How can you run all those events? You must be constantly travelling all over the world. I'm still trying to get my first real race under my belt.

thanks froggie. fortunately, with the Marathon Maniacs originating in the Pacific Northwest, there's a huge overabundance of events* within within an hour or so so close to Seattle that I'm takin' the bus to most of them.

- incidentally, I started running at age 34 so you have a lot of fun to look forward to too.

I have a hard time even imagining that some people would need to run more than 1 marathon a year.
Then again, I said the same thing about running 3 miles, a few years ago.
BTW, I took one look at the video of that climber/runner guy and almost fainted. He's obviously mentally unbalanced!

Good question as even one was somewhat of an inconvenience in the days of raising family, etc.
Actually, I started running the hometown marathon each summer with some ski buddies just to see if we were in good enough shape to do it. We didn't train and just treated them like a long hike but getting to run all the way as we didn't have to carry anything as in hiking.
The custom of at least one a year continued for twenty years when I moved to Seattle and it was convenient to do two or three a year. Now there's so many that it would be easy to do 20 a year within one hour of the city and I've been doing 10-12 for the last four years. Like most of the
www.marathonmaniacs.com
gang, it's more than enough to be able to do without having to worry about special training for them.

Tetsujin: I've read your story on barefoot running and it sounds like something out of Stephen King's book:
Last month, after returning from an eight-mile run, Tsuyoshi Yoshino heated up a three-inch sewing needle until it turned bright red. Then, he says, he plunged the glowing instrument into the ball of his foot, puncturing a three-inch-long blister.

yeah, over on our
www.runningbarefoot.org
board link, we think tsuneyoshi must have some sort of zen or something masochist fixation as the only time any of the hundreds of other barefoot runners over there has gotten a blister has been when running at very elevated temperatures (90 and above) and running on hot black asphalt. Otherwise, running barefoot forces correct form in foot landings for a soft landing on the forefoot with no heel landing at all.

Hmmm, I'd like to try it one day. The problem is that I have no good surface to run on barefooted. It's all asphalt or gravel paths (ouch!). If I lived near a seashore, that'd be much better.
