Aloha, I wish I was there now!!!
I live in cold, snowy Wisconsin, but I've been to Hawaii and did some running there. In 2004 I was in Waikiki in February, did the loop around Diamondhead a couple of times. Then we went to Kauai, stayed in Poipu, I ran around that area quite a bit.
In 2005, we spent two weeks in Sept. on Maui, and I ran the Maui marathon.
It was hot, but we had a great time recovering in Paradise after. I was there the week before, in the Makena area (Prince), did my last week of taper in that area. Then we moved to Kaanapali the day before the race. I only ran once there, besides the marathon, a few days afterwards.
We hope to get back there next winter. Probably going to the Big Island, might run the marathon in March. Any suggestions/info about the race, or things to do, places to stay would be appreciated.
Aloha!

Aloha and welcome Liz & Larry...
I'm Steve. I live on O'ahu. I started running about 2 years ago to get in shape and now i'm really into it. I still surf (which is my main passion) and occasionally go paddling, but running is about the easiest sport you can do.
Larry, i have only ran the 10.8 mile run of the Hilo marathon, which is actually the first 10.8 mile part of the marathon. The course is beautiful, running along the Hamakua coastal rain forest. Its a very small race and the atmosphere was great. My quads hurt like hell running the 10.8 mile (all those gulches
), maybe next year i'll do the full one. I lived in Hilo for my undergraduate years so i can definitely give some recommendations on things to do and where to eat
.

Ah, I started my running "career" in Hawaii back around 1997...
Started by walking around DH from KCC (was a student there). I loved it. Eventually was doing a 15 m/m and felt the need for some speed and started throwing some runs in there. The rest, I shall say, is history.
did the H3 10 miler (walked) very controversial, I know.
have done a couple of the great aloha runs in February. Am thinking the one in 09 might me doable for me...
I think I did the straub 10k once
did the honolulu marathon in 05
and....tried to do the Hibisucs Half this past june, but an injury forced me to stop around mile 5.
When I was in town last year, I would run from the Honolulu club to Ala Moana park...at 5 a.m.!!! I loved it and sure wish I was there running today.
Thanks for starting this group.....please share your stories of life in the islands here....I miss them so
where you wen grad?
What part of Oahu do you live?
I have lived in Alewa Heights, Palolo, Maunalani Heights, and downtonw in Kukui Plaza....

Hey!
I had the pleasure to live on Kauai for the past 2 years. This past May my wife and I moved back to Illinois because we were expeceting our first child (now the second love of my life
). I am really missing living in Hawaii, not only for the weather but for the people as well! I love and miss the local community on Kauai! I was able to help coach track and CC at Waimea HS while I was down there and from that point on just fell in love!
As for racing and competition on Kauai, it was pretty slim pickings, there were 3 races done every year and I did all three atleast once in my 2 years of being down there. I also ran the Honolulu Marathon in 05 and 06, my times were not that great (I think I got over dehydrated both times) but I finished!
SurfNRun running, I look forward to hearing your stories about Oahu and the races!

Oh, I love Hawaii! My hubby lived there for a year a while back (USMC) and I ran the '05 Honolulu Marathon and my mom and I did the '07. (this year I beat my first time by 25 mins!). We plan on going back at least every other year, perhaps more frequently. I really could see myself living there! I look forward to my next visit and maybe I could have a surfing lesson from you SurfNRun!

Summer...how did you like the rain on 07 honolulu marathon ? The first few miles had me worried because i couldn't see the potholes on the roads..i have a bad history with turning my ankles so i was ultra careful. Our time is really close, I came in at 4:41 ... I was aiming for 4:20 but so it goes...
aloha,
steve

i am actually not originally from Hawaii. I moved here, to Hilo actually, to start my undergrad in 94, moved to O'ahu in 2000 and been here since and not moving anywhere, anytime soon..
. I live in Palolo valley.
I was gonna do the Hibiscus Half but have decided to start paddling and do the molokai race and couldn't find the time to train for that one. I had simultaneous paddling+marathon training which was pretty hard but i managed to do both. I'll probably do the same this year also. This february will be my third Great Aloha Run. I'm not sure why i run it, its not the prettiest of courses but its one of the first longish race that i did so i guess i'll keep doing it. When is the H3 10 miler ? I bet its a pretty race.

Hi Mark,
Cute baby. Part of the reason i started running was after we had our first baby, i was a stay at home dad + grad student for the first 18 months...needless to say, the pregnancy sympathy weight gain + being stay at home dad + the inability to breastfeed to lose some calories
= out of control weight gain. Kauai is really nice though i don't get to go there that often.

Steve, I didn't mind the rain so much. I was suprised that I didn't get blisters from running in wet shoes/socks. But I was glad I saw my dad at mile 4 because I handed him my camera and phone that were getting soaked. In the beginning I was running on the side walk and coming across huge puddles while crossing streets and ended up just running on through them. Next time I'm shooting for 4:30 and hopefully you'll reach your 4:20!

Oh, you look local
The H3 10 miler was a one time deal, just before the new road opened to the public. Because H3 was such a controversial roadway, many would not do this run, and the elites that were invited backed out, so it really was a locals race. I considered not running it to support the local protest, but....a one and only time thing and the fact that it was built and going to open, I did it. Glad I did.
I moved to Oahu from snowy Central NY in 1992. In 1997 I got an AS in Legal Assisting at KCC, then in 1999 went to HPU and got a BA in Poli Sci in Dec. 2000. Left the islands in 2001 and most days regret it (but I do love my career).
When is the Molokai race (or is it already, how you do?). Do you paddle in the Ala Wai...ewwwww!!!!
So today I am out running the National Mall enjoying the sites and listening to Keile'i, Bruddah IZ and the Caz Bro (along with some Janis Joplin, Cat Stevens, Rod Stewart, etc. etc.)....There I am belting out Hawaiian Superman as I am rounding the Lincoln Memorial....love that song.

Hello, SurfNRun. Add me to the list of Hawaii expats. Oahu, specifically, were I lived out my hunnabuddah days before moving to the mainland.
Decided to join this group to keep tabs on the old running scene maybe reminisce if any other "old folks" join up. (I'm not old, but started running young.)
What's the running scene like in Honolulu nowadays?
Auwe, I get hungry any time I think of Hawaii.

howzit Ainokea...
glad to have you here. I'm relatively new to running and so fairly new to the running scene here in Hawaii. Hopefully more folks will come and join in to talk story about running over here. I am thinking about joining the MidPac RoadRunners club just to get more involved in the scene. Racing wise i think there are tons of great races being run year round.
aloha,
steve

Aloha!!! Noho au ma Hilo. Actually I don't live in Hilo, I live up in Mt. View. I am originally from Oahu but moved to the Big Island in 2000. I am a relatively new runner- I used to run as a kid, but mostly because my dad was a runner and used to drag me along- in fact he literally dragged me through the Aloha Run a few times. I took up running again for ME about 6 months ago and am having a blast. I am planning on running the Aloha Run this Feb. I have ran a couple of 5Ks in Hilo, but at this point in my running (I am VERY SLOW) I kind of miss the big anonymous Honolulu runs- there is less a chance of coming in dead last in the bigger races, plus you don't know half the people passing you.
Surfn- thanks for starting this board!
