The "Penguin" daily threads were originally conceived to emphasize that all members of the community have a place on the boards. Encouragement, motivation, a little love nip (you will love one, give it a try!) or even a little kick in the pants when needed -- it can happen here. Basically, we celebrate just getting out there and moving our tails! What is "slow"? "Slow" is a perception but one of the common benchmarks is the 10:00/mi pace; but there's no firm line. In fact, there are many of us that have slipped past this, and just hope that no one notices and revokes their "igloo privileges." It can be confusing for the forum newbies, but we're not one of the teams in any of the fine games. It's a totally open group, so stop lurking, post an introduction of yourself dive in and join the fun! No application necessary! There might even be a lovely picture for Scotty (we love pics!)

Morning Penguins, RD & gym tonight.
Still trying to figure out a marathon plan. Looking at an 18 week 2Q Daniels plan. Some of the runs can be a little complex.
2E + 2x(1T w/1M rst)+ 30m e +2x(1T w/1m rst) + 2E
Morning! Pilates and 4 miles tonight.
StoneFence got it right. I don't want to take a test!
Jerry, it looks like the cyclist was an actress in the series Chicago Fire, from what I read.

As part of the 2024 London Marathon, I am fundraising for VICTA, a charity that helps blind and visually impaired children. My mentor while in law school, Jim K (a blind attorney), has been a huge inspiration and an example of courage and perseverance. Please consider donating.

Morning! I had a good 10 last night. I needed to run it super slow to make sure it was enjoyable, but that's what I did. Plus I went out early enough that I didn't need a headlamp- always nice. Today I have 8 easy after work.
PAD- The nice thing about runs like that is that you'll spend all your time trying to remember what you need to do and won't have any time to feel tired!
I did 3 M easy this morning and will do strength later probably 30 mins of "the shred". It's still hot here. 5 more days of 90s then we cool off into 80s.
pad, that does look like calculus! Or something evil for sure.
Jerry, is that Sierra Nevada FALL PACK at Costco? I need that.
Mitch, I have done all those hikes you mentioned. I also did Ramsey's cascades and it about killed me but it was worth it. I wasn't in as good of shape then Though. OUR cabin is RIGHT in downtown Gatlinburg and its right on the river. We wanted to be able to walk around and not have to worry about parking and traffic. We are also staying 5 days. I LOVE the Smokies. It's my Fave place.
sad about the cyclist/ actress and that she was a mom :-(

Morning, Penguins!! I told DH last night that we were getting up early this morning for my walk, his run. Which was a good thing, because when my alarm went off and I wanted to bail and sleep in, he wouldn't let me. So, my walk is done! And I only have to get up four more mornings before I'm getting up on Beach Morning!! We're headed to OBX next Saturday for a week at the beach, and I am SOOOOO looking forward to it!And in other news, my cousin had her baby this morning, by scheduled C-section. 11 lbs, 4oz. He's a sturdy little fellow!Stone -- woo-hoo for nice weather!!PAD -- apparently you're supposed to run with a trigonometry class? Good luck!!Docket -- Have a good Pilates and 4!! Never heard of Chicago Fire.Zelanie -- glad your 10 was nice!!traci -- woo-hoo for your easy 3!!
When it's all said and done, no one remembers how far we have run. The only thing that matters is how we have loved.
Return To Racing
Staying home today to watch the next phase of our sewer repair. No running as I'm a little sore from yesterday's LR.
Traci, I think Jack got his from Costco. I got mine at Binny's Beverage Depot.
From the Internet.
Hi pens!
Taking today and probably tomorrow off, my legs are feeling achy and tired. My older pair of DS Trainers is possibly due to be retired, which might be contributing to the achy tired legs, so I ordered a pair of Mizuno Wave Sayonaras to try. I liked them when I first tried them on last summer but sent them back before I actually had a chance to run in them. Why can't I just stick with shoes that I know work for me? Who knows. Hopefully the Sayonaras will be a nice addition to the rotation
Possibly racing this weekend, there's a 5k near my house on Sunday. Not a certified course as far as I can tell, so if it's not a PR at least it will be race day practice and give me an idea of whether my goal for my Oct. 5 race is reasonable.
StoneFence - since it's a nice day, I hope you get out for your workout.
PAD - that gives me a headache just trying to figure it out. Good luck. Which marathon?
Damaris - enjoy your pilates and recovery run tonight.
Z - I'm glad your evening run went better. Have a good one tonight. I'm glad they got the fire out.
Tracilynn - good job on the early run. Hope the "Shred" workout goes well.
HopesMom - I'm glad you got your walk in early. More yoga this afternoon? Hope your beach trip goes well.
Jerry - good luck with the sewer repair. How long do they expect it to take?
Lauren - old shoes will make your legs more sore. Why did you pick the Sayonaras?
AFM: It has cooled off considerably here - 75 today. I'll do a few miles this afternoon, probably on the ski trail since we haven't been there for a while. Jim and Ben can walk the loop and I'll run it and everybody will be happy.

That approach definitely appeals to me, when I really don't feel like being on my feet anymore I do math problems with how much distance I have left to go/how far I've already gone. That's what got me through last Thursday's tempo, haha.
Congrats to your cousin HsM! Sturdy is right, wow!
Ginny - The Sayonara was designed as a replacement for two shoes that I absolutely loved in the past (Mizuno's Elixir and Precision), and my usual DS Trainers are backordered at Running Warehouse until next week - I'm impatient, what can I say Was considering the DS Racer too, but the price on the Sayonara was too good to pass up.
I noticed a pair of my running shoes are almost 2 years old but only have 150 running miles on them. They are stability shoes and I haven't worn stability in awhile. Are they too old to run in? Even though the miles are low?
I only run in Hokas now and they are almost a year old? Should they be replaced even though they only have 358 miles on them?
Barking Mad To Run
"Yeah, the view IS great!"
Rest day for me after 3 days in row running and lots of watching football. Cheering, booing, and drinking can wear you out.
Get the last day done, StoneFence, then you will be glad it's done and can take a well-earned rest day tomorrow.
Happy gym time, PAD. Good luck selecting a plan. When I did distance running, I just used Glover's "Get me to the finish line!" plans..nothing complicated about them at all.
Speaking of cyclists, Damaris and Jerry...is this crazy or what? OK, a cyclist here in San Antonio is on his ride and gets mad because a car is parked in the bike lane. So the cyclist smashes the car windshield and keeps going on his way. The driver happens to be coming out of a nearby house when the biker breaks the window. A chase ensues the guys in the vehicle do a 'drive-by', shooting at the cyclist. Jeez. Welcome to the neighborhood! Here's the news story: http://www.foxsanantonio.com/news/features/top-stories/stories/bicyclist-chased-shot-at-after-breaking-car-windshield-6299.shtml#.VA3rM2PEdGU
Congrats on the 10, Z, and good luck with the 8 today.
Way to go on the a.m. miles, Traci. Good luck with the weather. Yeah it is cooling off for us a bit this week too...no 100 degrees!
Wow, HsM, 11 lbs...that's gonna be a big kid! Mucho blessings to your cousin and family! Good for your DH for keeping you accountable!
Hopefully, Lauren, that "Sayonara" will mean 'goodbye' to your leg aches and not 'goodbye' to having to return the shoes.
75 sounds wonderful, Ginny! Enjoy the run!

If you haven't worn stability shoes in a while, I'm not sure I'd go back to them. Cushioning will break down even if they're just sitting in the closet, IIRC, and if your shins are ok in the Hokas, I'd be awfully wary of going back to stability.
As for replacing the Hokas, I dunno. Docket might know, she wears them on occasion.
